Rhode Island Wins Bid To Take 38 Studios' Assets

Rhode Island is now in control of 38 Studios' IP, including Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and its MMORPG offshoot, known as Project Copernicus. The state is planning to seize computer equipment to keep the IP as intact as possible in preparation for an eventual sale.

Rhode Island helped the studio relocate there from Massachusetts by issuing $75 million in state bonds. As collateral, the now-bankrupt 38 Studios offered its assets, including patents, software, property, and the rights to its IP. The state moved to take control of those assets to prevent a bankruptcy trustee from selling items, such as computers, individually. Rhode Island argued in court that such a move would irreparably damage the state's efforts to keep 38 Studios' IP intact, as it prepares for a resale.

In an interview with Game Informer, EA Label president Frank Gibeau expressed interest in a possible Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning sequel. A source within Reckoning's development team later told us that EA passed on such a sequel in March.

  • I like his sword.
  • As long as EA doesn't own it.
  • I feel that this could be a smart move by Rhode Island but I don't know how interested other companies are for developing a sequel to KoA. But wouldn't, as the article stated, a TON of data get lost in the process? That could damage the sale in some people's eyes.

Edit: Sorry I meant Rhode Island, I wrote this really fast, thanks though.
  • I wonder who they are going to sell it to.

  • As much as it is sad to see the closure of 38 Studios, its good to see the KoA IP intact. Hope it gets sold to a company that will keep KoA in a quality state.
  • I really hope EPIC steps in and picks this up since they already helped employ some of those effected by this whole mess. Buy the IP and retain some of the talent as well, EPIC could be the place where Amalur can continue to grow into a great franchise! It had it's flaws, but I really enjoyed KOA and hope that it will be back.
  • This is just an ugly situation all arround isn't it?

  • I hope the IP goes to a developer that can do the series justice. I really liked KoA despite its "MMO-ish" traits and I'm still holding out hope that either Copernicus or at least a single-player sequel will see the light of day.

  • YES!!! PLEASE MORE KoA!!!
  • Such a shame that this happened as it did.

  • Maybe EA can get it... turn it into Mass Effect Age lighter.

  • Wow. This sucks. I'm hoping another company will buy the IP. You'd think SOME ONE would want to buy it. It's a guaranteed money maker!
  • cant help but think that the critics killed the selling potential of this game
  • Give Valve a chance for this sequel for gods sake!
  • Epic should pony up the dough so they can buy this for their new studio, Impossible Studios, and make that their first new game instead of wasting time on iOS.
  • Hopefully Bethesda or Epic buy the rights.

  • Still the saddest thing I've seen in the last 5 years in gaming. Such a promising IP and then all this goes down. Also why are Rhode Island people not flipping out that their state payed tax money to bring a game company in?
  • I really enjoyed the game, what a shame this all happened.

  • I hope that EA does pick this up. It feels like it has the same amount of polish as one of their games. That is, it's a pretty good game, but not perfect. I think that the IP would be a good fit for them. Maybe they could hand it off to Bioware.
