Day Z Becoming A Standalone Game

When over one million people are playing a PC mod you created, it's probably time to start thinking even bigger. Day Z, the zombie mod for ARMAII, is now becoming a standalone game. Development is being handled by Bohemia Interactive, creators of ARMAII, with Dean "Rocket" Hall, who started Day Z, acting as project lead.

"Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so," Hall wrote on his blog. "The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price."

The official website promises future updates over the coming weeks and months.

  • Well that's fantastic. It's always good to see when popular mods can have the chance to become standalone games themselves.
  • We have gone too far with this Zombie thing... I do believe this is a good step in gaming.
  • I need to play this.

  • DayZ is great. Maybe I'll finally get it now that its its own thing. Even better, imagine what other things could become big enough for this treatment. This is a really important thing.

  • How come it wasn't called "Z Day" in stead?
  • Great news! I wish it would come out on consoles though.
  • lol at all the people who didnt know and spent $30-$40 on arma 2 just for dayz. glad i knew they were planing on a full release so i didnt buy it. so going to buy into the alpha though.
  • Good to hear, right now its incredibly buggy and needs some work on balancing and anti cheat measures, but it has so much potential I'm glad to see it getting the attention it deserves.

  • That's great news to hear a mod of a game become standalone, which is kinda rare I think. It could also give people who have low tech computers a chance to play the game(if the system requirements aren't high).
  • BRO TEAM!!!

  • ...Console release? ... Pretty please?
  • Can't wait I'm in the process of re installing my Arma 2 games so I can DL this fine specimen of a mod!

Edit: Downloaded it,Played it, Loved it, gave me Blue screen of death, Fixed, might give it another go.
  • DANG IT. I SHOULD'VE WAITED TO BUY THIS INSTEAD OF THE PACK ON STEAM. (Because its not even working on my computer. T.T)

  • In a couple of years..."DayZ Xbox Live Arcade Addition"
  • This comes as no surprise, and yet is awesome nonetheless...

  • This mod definitely deserves to be played on a better engine, seeing as ArmA's engine is clunky as anything. This is some fantastic news and I cannot wait to see where this mod goes now! :D
  • Cool, I have been watching videos for this mod for a while and they really grabbed my interest; but I didn't want to spend the money on ARMA II and the expansion.

I'll probably buy this game in alpha and not make the same mistake I did with Minecraft.

  • That's interesting. I'll be picking this game up when it's released and play it with my cousins.
  • Nifty. It's interesting to see that Bohemia's developing the project. Maybe this'll lead to more games including mod tools and opportunities as devs and publishers see the potential for completely new games. Not to mention the power to move a million units of the base game...
