THQ Cancels Insane Trilogy

THQ said today it has canceled pre-production on Insane, the trilogy project from Volition Studios and movie director Guillermo Del Toro. The publisher said it has returned the rights of the game to Del Toro. The game was first revealed in December 2010. Since then, no other information has surfaced from the developer. THQ says Insane was in very early exploratory development and that no development teams have been affected by this announcement.

President Jason Rubin told Game Informer in an interview at E3 this June that Insane was still in production.

Previously, THQ also dropped publishing Devil's Third from Tomonobu Itagaki's Valhalla Game Studios.

Tough break for del Toro. First, he can't get At The Mountains of Madness green-lit in Hollywood, now this. At least Pacific Rim sounds like it'll be a blast, but Guillermo is a horror/creature guy at heart. I hope he gets to put out more of his usual stuff sooner rather than later.

My only solace is that the game didn't sound too exceptional. It's a bummer, though, del Toro's responsible for one of my favorite movies in Hellboy II, and I think he'd lend himself pretty well to video game concepts and narrative. Here's to hoping he takes another jab at the industry.

Ouch, I really thought this was gonna be THQ's secret weapon they were relying on in their back pocket ever since their troubles. Was expecting the release of Darksiders II and Insane to bring them out into calmer waters, but guess not :(

Weird how tough it can be to get work published when you're the director of the highest critically rated film of all time. I'm hoping he goes on to work with the folks at Irrational. Ken Levine and Del Toro working together might create some sort of interdimensional brain-portal to the land of brilliant games.

Well, THQ has been horribly mismanaged. Saving the company will take various sacrifices. I just hope that the Vigil team doesn't come under attack when Darksiders ships. Really love the lore/world of that game and want that franchise to thrive. It's tough, that's for sure.

As sad as this is, I can understand considering the situation THQ has been in. That said, I hope this isn't gone forever. Maybe it'll come back in a new form, hopefully with a new company. Or possibly even when THQ is doing better?

I sure hope THQ doesn't go under, hopefully Darksiders 2 and Metro Last Light do really good.
