World Of Warcraft Subscribers Drop By Over 1 Million

Player subscriptions for World of Warcraft has dropped to 9.1 million worldwide, Activision Blizzard announced today. Last quarter, total subscribers were at 10.2 million. It's not all bad for Blizzard, however. Diablo III has sold more than 10 million copies since launch. 1.2 million of those came from the World of Warcraft Annual Pass.

The upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria, launches September 25, 2012.

  • 9.1 is still a lot of subscribers. I haven't played in probably over a year now, but I still remember playing the beta and how great this game used to be.
  • I frankly doubt they will worry until apps drop below 3 mill. However, that is so unlikely to happen within the next 5+ years.
  • the beginning of the end for WoW. Pandas wont save it.
  • Honestly, I'm truly surprised it has managed to hold as many subscribers as it has for all these years.  There just doesn't seem to be any meaningful goal to work towards when it comes to (any) MMO's.

At some point, people become more interested in beating or exploiting the systems and that never works out well for such a socially minded gameplay experience.

  • Should I be surprised? Warcraft has outlived its lifetime.
  • If World of Warcraft keeps pumping out quality content, people will keep playing.

  • When Blizzard finally understands that WoW is worn out!
  • Ive tried this game several times, never could keep interest. Old Republic kept me entertained for a about a 2 months on two seperate occasions but was to exspensive and gets repetitve becuase of freaking starting and 2nd planets being the same for other classes and takes a good amount of time to get through. Only mmo I play on a regular basis is World of Tanks if you can call it a mmo. Looking forward to Guild Wars 2 and the elder scrolls game though. This game has to be respected for how much it has achieved but it will honestly die out before 2020 and servers will no longer exist in my opinion.
  • Diablo 3 sold 10 million copies? Holy ****
  • Time to take W.O.W. out behind the barn...........

  • Woah... if SWTORs subscriber numbers dropped by that much, there'd be like five people playing. I wonder if Blizzard will ever make WoW F2P. Not that they necessarily NEED more people playing, 9.1 million is still huge.
  • Losing 1 mill subscribers per quarter....yeah game will be no longer relevant in 2 years.
  • I'm not suprised, they've now got Pandas doing flips and barrel rolls. This just in! WoW's 5th expansion will feature walking Whalrus! With an exclusice Whale mount!
  • GW2, the Rift expansion, and Mysts of Pandaria will all cause WoW to drop to 6-7 million subs and then WoW will continue to decline. Just an opinion after playing WoW for 5+ years, playing Rift for a while, and playing the GW2 beta.
  • 9.1 million subscribers is still an impressive number. But when MoP(MeH) comes out I foresee a bigger drop...

  • I'll definitely play the expansion, but I have a feeling it will go similarly to the last. Cataclysm was fun, but it couldn't keep me into the game for more than a couple of months.
  • I am one of them. I'm just waiting until MoP comes out and then I'll be back.
  • the subs always drop during summer as people wait for the new expansion they just let their account go and come back when the new expansion hits

  • give me a Warcraft 4 RTS, have it pick up right after Frozen Throne, and declare all off WOW some alternete universe spin off junk so that all the ruined lore doesnt F up the RTS.

  • Oh no. They're only still making a billion dollars a second.
