Numbers Down For Sony

Sony reports that it hasn't had a good first quarter of the current fiscal year, and the company is changing its outlook for this quarter and the fiscal year as a whole.

The company didn't break out each of its consoles specifically, but the PS3 and PS2 combined sold 2.8 million units worldwide, which is down from last year's first quarter mark of 3.2 million. Likewise, the PSP and Vita combined for 1.4 million units as compared to 1.8 over the same timeframe last year.

In software, PS2 and PS3 games went from 27.6 million to 20.1 million, and PSP and Vita software went from 6.6 million to 5.8 million.

Sony has accordingly downgraded its outlook for the current fiscal year and anticipates the second quarter to be a "severe operating environment."

  • I know why is this problem. MINECRAFT!!!!!!!!! if we had Minecraft then  i think a couple thousands people more would buy PS3.

  • It's pretty easy to compare month to month from last year to this year and see what the issue is. There has been a lot less offered. I usually buy every new game on release (besides sports) and this year my wallet has had a lot more money in it. Something I am not fond of. When my wallet is heavy my game rack is light and that is not cool. The next 6 months look better, well, after August and September anyway.

Give me something to buy SONY! I promise to be there even if it's not that great. (Unfortunately my need to buy and have new things gets in the way of better judgement.) I'm the perfect consumer.

I'm a Disabled Combat Vet. I support all major game companies MS to Sony and all the 3rd parties in between. Bad news for any of them is bad news for us. Competition inspires creation, effort and ingenuity. We are all on the same team when it comes to what we love. Games, although the name does no justice to how important these experiences can be to some of us.
  • Give me a... PS3 PRICE DROP!!!

  • Being straightforward, it's pretty much Sony's fault. Many will argue it's just because of the console's life cycle end, well is not because the end of cycle is just part of the big picture. PSVita is also struggling and it doesn't look like the coming exclusives will provide any good boost. The fact with the home console is that exclusives haven't been selling pretty well (curious how M$ manages to sell more with a lot less, but there logical in it), and with the mobile is one word, Apple. Apple is eating into Sony no matter where you look at it from. That covers gaming. Other Sony divisions are still losing money (specially TVs and cellphones). I think Sony's media division (TV and movies) is the only profitable one as of now. Hirai's plan for unifying divisions may backfire in the long term. Sony is losing appeal with the public.
  • it's a shame, but it's to be expected this late in the cycle, 360 is in the same boat im sure. In my experience tho the PS3 has easily been the best console this gen, and im not trying to start a flame war, just stating my opinion, and yes i have/had all three consoles. So *** off if you dont like my opinion

  • Maybe they should have come out with another console by now?

  • With everything else Sony does, I'd be surprised if they vastly change their plan for their gaming division.

  • Time for New Tech... 10 year life cyrcle for the current Gen,is way too long... i have been hoping for new Tech the last 2 years.

Hope 2013 is the year of new consoles,we will see, wich new console is gonna get my cash... May the best develloper win.

  • As much as i love my ps3...its there fault they are struggling..ALL these great game franchises that started out on the playstation have branched out to other consoles..and thats were they are losing..for example resident evil started on the playstation and when i see the new commercials for an upcoming RE game it says xbox 360..so i think they should spent more money making sum of these games exclusive..they would of brought more money in..just my opinion
  • Suck but at the very least this loss is significantly less than some of their previous losses. So hopefully this is a sign that in the coming years profits will rise. The decrease in PS3 sales is expected considering that the media is pretty much hyping up the release of the PS4 like its coming out tomorrow.

  • Maybe they should invest more time in making controllers like the wii controllers or maybe they should sell 3D Monitors, maybe they should make lesser quality consoles that give you a colored light of death so you have to buy 3 more.

  • It can only be expected after poor vita sales, but those should go up with the assassins creed and call of duty games releasing this fall, all we need is a new god of war and it will be better than the 3ds.

  • This is no surprise, a ton of good games do not come out for the PS3, most games that do, come to the 360 way beforehand amongst many other things. Its a good thing my PS3 cost so little to get.

  • Sony, I like you the best out of the three consoles, but damn... get your act together. I am sick and tired of having nothing to buy! See this? in my hand? It's money... and it's going to a 3DSXL. That could have been your money, though, if only you made games that interest me. Basically all the franchises I fell in love with from the PS1 & 2 are either MIA or completely re-imagined into something ugly. It's within you to get good developers again and start producing the good exclusives, so DO IT.

  • they do run multi divisions but their sales on tvs and other products are not doing so well and now where seeing their game division taking a hit if they dont get their acts staight and stop screwing their ps3 fanbase it would lead to their undoing in a big way and also not pissing off hackers groups in the process

  • not shocking... its the end of a console cycle... happens at each one

  • like i said to my friend, Sony is slowly losing it's momentum. But everything will soon come into play.

  • They have to make and sell games ALL YEAR LONG if they want people to buy their SYSTEM all year long.

  • the ps3  price will drop no choice

  • Hang in there Sony, we'll bounce back. And to all you morons who complain about 'cross game chat' and the like, PS3 is fine without it. Go back to your Xboxes and chat all you want, on PS3 WE PLAY GAMES, not sit around and chat about who got their first pube.
