Oculus Rift Kickstarter Announced

Fans of virtual reality gaming may be interested in a new headset project call Rift. The developer behind it, Oculus, is seeking funding through Kickstarter.

The new headset is developed specifically for video games and will "change the way you think about gaming forever." The team is seeking a pledge goal of $250,000 and has already received support from the likes of Gabe Newell from Valve, John Carmark of id Software, and Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games.

"All of us at Oculus are excited to bring truly immersive VR to people who love video games like we do,” Oculus founder Palmer Luckey says. “Virtual reality has been the long sought after Holy Grail, which most people only ever dreamed of... until now.

The Rift is a true game changer that will help make VR the standard for gameplay in the very near future.”

  • Good lord, there's a new Kickstarter every five minutes.
  • I kinda wish I knew what it was exactly. I mean I understand what it does, but why is it so special in comparison to other ones and how does it exactly work.
  • I'm not sure I'm ready to invest in virtual reality yet. It's too soon, IMO.
  • what IS virtual reality?
  • Meh

  • Heh, it was at $90k when I checked a couple of hours ago, and they've already beat their goal... Looks pretty interesting, and you can't really beat recommendations from Gaben, Carmack, and CliffyB, but I'd want to see some more beta stuff before I give money to it. Surprised to see the numbers shooting up as much as they are with the relatively lackluster pledge bonuses.
  • If I can control it with my mind, I would definitely buy it. I have a feeling I won't get that lucky, though.
  • Virtua Boy? :3
  • If that hunk of plastic is supposed to be attached to my face in some fashion, then no thanks.

  • Can I use it on my Ouya?
  • Cool, but can we stop with all of the Kickstarter stuff? It's getting annoying.
  • I'm going to kickstart a kickstarter project with a my kickstarter money I got for a kickstarter project I kickstarted.
  • I hope it doesn't stay bulky like that.

  • enough already!
  • I can't imagine staring at a screen that's an inch from your face is good for your eyes.
  • The big twist is, we are all living in a virtual world, and the goggles will hep us see reality as it truly is.
  • Certainly a neat concept.

  • Anyone else remember VR Troopers?
  • 1992 called......
  • Seems cool.
