Max Payne 3 & Spec Ops: The Line Don't Bolster Take-Two

Publisher Take-Two has reported a $110.8 million loss for the first quarter of this year, and the company has specifically cited lower-than-expected sales of Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line for the dip.

The publisher did not cite sales numbers or expectations for the pair, but in a conference call Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "As a hit-driven entertainment company, not every title we produce will meet our sales targets." According to Gamasutra, analyst targets for Take-Two's first quarter was approximately $255 million.

The good news for the company is that digital sales were up 33 percent.

  • bummer....

  • Does look like a good game though
  • That's a shame, both games were good.  I still intend to play Max Payne multiplayer.  Spec Ops on the other hand I'm probably not going to touch again.  Campaign was great, but I find the shooting pretty lackluster.

  • me too

  • I haven't played Spec-Ops, but I have played Max Payne 3, and I loved it. It's unfortunate that they lost money on these games, but i would think that as a whole, Take Two is still doing quite well.
  • Weird, I thought MP3 did really well...or maybe it did, and they just had lofty expectations.
  • ouch

  • i wouldnt be to worried with borderlands bioshock and gta coming out in the future!!!
  • That stinks. I really like them both, but wish they sold better.
  • They will make it up double when Borderlands 2, GTA V and Bioshock Infinite come out.
  • Well now I feel all kinds of bad for not buying Max Payne 3. Didn't seem worth it since I'm not interested in the multiplayer.
  • Max Payne 3 is good but its only worth renting bc theres absolutely nuthin more to do after campaign..the multiplayer is TRASH...so dont waste 60$ just play the story and take it back
  • For everyone that hasn't bought Max Payne 3... get to it.
*looks up two posts and glares*
  • Well that is not good at all

  • I'm pretty much over playing any kind of shooter. Change comes with age, and I'm at a point where now these kinds of games just don't appeal to me. I used to spend countless hours playing Halo,COD,MOH,Battlefield. I know they are different games, but the mechanics are almost always the same. Spot,Aim,Fire,Spot Aim,Fire. I give them TOTAL RESPECT for what they do, and for the audience they are catering to. But it's just not my thing anymore. I never liked RPG's, but ME1 totally changed my mind. Now I like more artsy fartsy games, RPG/Shooter/Slasher with a good story or cool environments. Throw in the occasional platformer and I'm happy. I think I have a very eclectic taste in games now. Just in the past 6 months I have played ME3,Rayman Origins,El Shaddei,Asura's Wrath,Majin & The Forsaken Kingdom, and Dragons Dogma. I'm waiting on Darksiders 2,Borderlands 2, and Assassins Creed 3. I might still be in the target age for these shooters, but my taste in games is not.
  • Max Payne 3 is easily the best game i have played in recent memory.  Go buy it and turn in one of those stupid military shooters for some credit.

  • I'm proud to be one of the digital copy purchasers(on Steam)of both games. Sorry to hear they're not doing so well in sales. :(

Hopefully more people will eventually purchase these two games. MP3 is such a great game IMO.
  • Spec Ops and The Max Payne series in general didn't impress me. Tacking on a Multiplayer feature to a bullet-time based shooter did even less to impress me. Not every gamer plays a game to shoot other players.
  • Wow that sucks...MP3 was absolutely wonderful but SO:TL made me want to cry. Shame, I was so excited for Spec Ops, too.
