Minecraft Creator Originally Intended For "Steve" To Be Genderless

Markus "Notch" Persson wrote up a blog recently about the issue of gender in Minecraft. Persson's original intention when designing the game was to have the player character be entirely genderless. He regrets adding a goatee to the character and the name Steve came from a joke response when someone asked him about the character.

Persson also wrote about the gender of the animals in Minecraft, saying he intentionally designed them to be ambiguous. Persson wrote, "Cows have horns and udders (even if I’ve later learned that there are some cows where the females do have horns), and the chicken/duck/whatevers have heads that look like roosters, but still lay eggs. For breeding, any animal can breed with any other animal of the same species."

Persson also stated that the genderless nature of all the animals and characters in the game makes them all technically homosexuals. "Also, as a fun side fact, it means every character and animal in Minecraft is homosexual because there’s only one gender to choose from. Take THAT, homophobes!"

  • So... what you're REALLY saying is that Notch is a big fan of the Overblood super replay and wanted to put Weinerless Steve in Minecraft!?
  • PC funny build Troll face by Google picture funny

  • Wait...there was an issue?  Who the hell cares?

  • was that really a big enough issue to write an article about?

  • LMAO love his line about the animals hahaha. Well I wonder if people honestly would be bothered.

  • so i guess it could be adam and steve...
  • Wait... Steve has a goatee? I thought that was his mouth. Mind...blown.

  • I look and I look, but I simply cannot comprehend that that is a goatee. It does not work. Maybe if I doodle a little mouth on my screen with marker...

  • Genderless animals? You can't get milk from a bull.

  • He looks like a male. Who cares?

  • I didn't know Steve had a goatee, I thought he was always smiling.

  • This article is so pointless. Looking at Steve you can tell he's a dude making everything look the same is easier than creating genders. Mistake for me to read. Mistake to comment. *end pointless comment to pointless article*

  • Its not like they dont have skins male and female so thats all fine by me what makes it so bad as long the game is fun i dont care what is male or female

  • Wait that thing on the bottom is a goatee? i always just thought it was happy.....

  • So its ok to make genderless characters, but having women fight in bikinis' is inappropriate?

  • I always thought he was just really happy ad always smiling. And he had a name... I guess i dont pay attention to that stuff

  • If there is no gender then they can not be homosexual - they would not know that any other gender exists...because they do not.

  • thats why i have skin pack 1

  • thats a goatee always thought it was a mouth

  • I never considered the Minecraft avatar to have a gender, considering the fact that I could change the way my Avatar looks.
