Game Companies Sign On To Oppose DOMA

Electronic Arts, Zynga, and Microsoft have signed on to a brief urging the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to find the law, which outlaws gay marriage, unconstitutional.

The 9th Circuit is currently hearing an appeal to an earlier decision (Golinski vs. the U.S. Office of Personal Management), which found portions of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. In the original case, Karen Golinski won a settlement awarding her employee federal health benefits to her wife. The case is being appealed by a Republican-led group called BLAG (Bi-Partisan Legal Advisory Group).

The game companies involved have signed an amicus brief (a non-binding statement that is admissible based on the court's discretion) that supports the original ruling. Electronic Arts released a statement regarding the decision on its website:

Electronic Arts has joined with dozens of leading US employers in signing an amicus brief that opposes the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and urges the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to find portions of the Act unconstitutional.

DOMA presents a number of problems for businesses like EA, as it creates regulatory, tax, and discrimination complications for employers, and that’s why we’re standing against it. The underlying lawsuit impacts all employers no matter how big or small, and no matter the industry, and we encourage other business to join these efforts.

Other major technology and entertainment companies that have signed on to the brief include Google, eBay, Viacom, and CBS.

ayo everyone let's try to keep a calm conversation going ok.
  • good on them for supporting love in all its forms

  • So good to hear. It really is.

  • What my generation seems to be ignorant of is this: people voted in that law. The people of California, my home state, voted prop 22, then voted in prop 8 in support of prop 22. Since when do corporations and lobby groups have more rights than the American people? A government of the people, by the people, and for the people. This has nothing to do with my own personal stance on the issue because that's not the issue. The real threat is a loss of power in an individual's vote. If my vote means nothing, it can just be overturned because it serves a corporation like Microsoft, EA, etc (And don't be fooled. Money is what drives these companies, not morals), then we the people is a mirage. Freedom is bought with blood and sacrifice. It can take centuries to earn, but be lost in a single generation.
  • Why can't we all just get along!? I don't see a problem with any of this and there is no reason to get upset over it. Everyone has their own opinion and everyone has the right to be happy.

  • I'm not gay myself, but really, AMERICA, LAND OF THE FREE. This is a major setback if this law passes! Don't bring "religion"(let's face it, there's probably NOTHING in the bible that speaks against gay marriage) into politics.
  • It's a sad state of affairs that we even need to worry about opposing this act. Freedom and equality should be a given.

That being said, BLAG sounds very Republican. BLAG. That's me spitting out their inhumane policies. BLAG.
  • As a gaymer, this makes me happy to hear.
  • gays shud have the same rights as straight ppl
  • Why is this even a legal issue? What part of "America is not a theocracy" is so hard to understand???
  • take that chick-fil-a
  • These companies just lost my respect.
  • I don't appose gay marriage, but don't worry, in another couple years when gay marriage is finally legalized, we'll find some other stupid thing to argue about. Like if we really should allow hermit crabs as house pets for children under the age of 6 1/2.

  • I believe in gay marriage but gettin really *** tired of hearing about this ***.

I mean after all if gays wanna get married and be miserable like the rest of us let em' its not like were going to have a nationwide gay sex orgy if they get the right to marry

    looks into camera slowly
  • GO BLAG!!!!

  • I don't support homosexuality. However, that is really not the issue here. If it were, then porn and other such things should be against the law, too. I believe in personal liberty, and I don't think homosexuality is any worse than two 20-somethings living together before marriage. Gay marriage would be a civil union---just like a straight marriage. There would be no legal difference. Call me old-fashioned or any other colorful names, but I do believe in certain things over which no one has the right to judge me. Yet, I don't believe the government needs to be banning everything they can. If homosexuality is a sin, then God will take care of it. If God doesn't exist and homosexuality isn't a sin, then nobody is the worse for wear. Either way---we shouldn't worry ourselves too much about it.
  • Ok, someone has to say it. What about the intersex people? Are they even allowed to get married if marraige is defined as between one man and one woman? I feel that the intersex people are being largely ignored in this debate.
  • I could care less at this point. im more sick of hearing about it than anything. if your gay ok but stop shouting to the world you are. no one really cares.
  • That's pretty ghey.

  • I'm happy to see companies stand up for what is right.
