Dear Esther Keeps Selling

It's always a feel good story when indie games find commercial success. Dear Esther writer Dan Pinchbeck says the developer sold 250,000 copies of the game to date.

The studio notes on its blog the recent 50 percent off Steam sale boosted sales immensely. They sold 118,000 copies in just 48 hours. Dear Esther became profitable in its first six hours when going on sale back in February.

  • Steam, it moves copies
  • Steam: Bringing indie games success since whenever the hell they started!

  • Anyone could release anything on steam and make a profit. Wait nevermind, couldn't sell Kool-Aid on steam.
  • Mod
It was 75% off (or $7.50 off, final price: $2.50) at two different points during the Summer Sale, too.

At one point it simultaneously held the #3 and #8 positions for best-selling games of the day. Maybe because there was a version for $3.75 that included the soundtrack (that's the version I bought!). Probably a glitch, though.
  • I'm so curious about this game... I've been told that if I enjoyed playing Journey, which I did immensely, then I would love the story to Dear Esther.
  • I'd very much love to hear EA's thoughts on this considering they claim that these Steam sales cheapen IPs and insinuated the developers might not be too happy about it
  • That's good for them.

  • Started playing it a few days ago. Love it, although I'm not sure what's happening most of the time.
  • It deserved it

  • not bad

  • Totally deserves. Still, I'm a little bummed that I bought it for 9.99$ when it dropped to 2.49% the very next day. It's still an amazing experience for those who want a game that's more about narrative and ambiance.

  • I'm not big on PC gaming but I might have to get this, it looks so damn intriguing. I'll have to re-install steam first I guess.

  • I drew a lot of inspiration from the game for one of my short stories.  I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

  • Who'd have thought selling your game for up to 75% off would sell copies?
  • Must be a good game with sales like that. Maybe I'll check it out.

  • I'm sure the fact it has been featured in the Steam Summer Sale this week has helped top those sales up.
  • Damn you, Steam Summer Sale! I love you... but damn you.

  • We need more indie devs. A lot of AAA games aren't creative enough.
  • Except its not a game
