We're Getting Earth Defense Force 4

Publisher D3 unveiled a new teaser website for Earth Defense Force 4. Not much else is known about the title, including what platforms it'll launch on.

So far, there's no indication of a release in North America or Europe or what developer is handling the project. U.S. based Vicious Cycle developed Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, the last title to be released in North America.

D3 is also prepping Earth Defense Forces 3 Portable for PlayStation Vita this September in Japan.

  • Earth Defence 4!

  • I can genuinely say, YAY!!

  • I hope the Vita version makes it over here too.

  • What's Earth Defense?
  • New EDF hellz yeah!!

  • So is this different than the terrible Insect Armageddon, the last Earth Defense game? Insect Armageddon was totally lackluster in every way. The variety of weapons were lame. The way you unlocked them was super, super slow and drawn out. In 2017, you were unlocking awesome new weapons after every level. In Insect Armageddon, you were lucky to unlock one weapon every 5 levels. And the ones you unlocked were usually lame.

Not too mention the levels lacked any variety whatsoever. Unlike 2017, there was no level variety. It was the same city streets over and over and over again. The enemy variety was super lame as well. And you leveled up so incredibly slow that, even after playing the game from start to finish on the hardest difficulty 4 times with just one character, I wasn't even close to being fully leveled up.

I estimated that it would take you 7 plays through the single player campaign on the hardest difficulty to level your character up. The game is 4 hours long. That means you'd have to play the same, boring levels that lack any variety over and over again for a total of 28 hours in order to level up just ONE of the characters. If you wanted to level up all the other characters, you'd have to play for about 28 hours all over again. And add on to that the fact that they lock out the harder difficulties, so you have to play the game on the lower ones first to unlock the harder ones, where you earn more XP.

The only reason why they made it take so long was to try and force you to keep the game. It didn't work, since 3 days after I bought it I traded it back in and I saw 5 more used copies already on the shelf. Word to developers, trying to drag out the game to artificially inflate play time is a bad idea. It just frustrates games, it does not encourage them to play more.

Lame doesn't even begin to explain Insect Armageddon.
  • EDF! EDF! EDF!
  • Not interested, just like leaving comments
  • ED,How long did it take you to write that essay about EDF 4?

I am so looking forward to this game! SUPER EXCITE!

  • I wasn't the biggest fan of the last game, but I'll still give this one a try.

  • I didn't even know there was an earth defense 3
  • How is this four if there have only been 2 others? At least to my knowledge.
  • So did the second game recycle the same 8 environments over 50 missions like the 1st one?

  • Pretty sure EDF 2017 was the third one. I'm a huge fan of 2017, and I heard there was a Japanese EDF 2 for PS2 that was even better than 2017. All I can say is, I really hope Sandlot is developing this one again. Insect Armageddon was a huge letdown (although I shouldn't have been surprised since it came from the guys who brought us Matt Hazard), and it's just been too long since I've played a new Sandlot game.
