3DS Sales Pass 5 Million In The U.S.

Nintendo announced U.S. sales of the 3DS surpassed the 5 million unit mark. The number comes courtesy of retail tracking firm NPD.

Additionally, Nintendo sold more than 400,000 units in June in the U.S. On the software side, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D became the third Nintendo 3DS title to sell more than 1 million units, joining Super Mario 3D Land (2.1 million units sold life to date) and Mario Kart 7 (1.75 million units sold life to date), according to Nintendo.

“Nintendo 3DS is entering the next phase of its life cycle with new hardware, new games and proven franchises. This milestone shows we’ve got a great foundation to build from,” says Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing.

The 3DS XL launches in North America on August 19, 2012.

once this system builds up a bigger catalogue of games it's gonna be unstoppable. while i never even turn my 3D on, i love the system. MarioKart, Mario 3D Land, Ocarina of Time and Kid Icarus were all great games. Looking forward to Luigi's Mansion 2, Kingdom Hearts, New Super Mario Bros 2 and everything else on the way. now it's just time to pick up that Vita...

Seems like a pretty good system, I'll probably buy it in like 2-3 years when its super cheap compared to everything else like what I did with the DS Lite.

5 million units sold sounds impressive to me, especially considering the 3DS XL hasn't come out yet. Once it does, I imagine the sales should start growing even faster. I remember hearing a lot of people say that they'd wait for the second version of the 3DS before buying it. (I was one of these people, before I got my 3DS as a Christmas gift).

What cracks me up is that analysts, and some video game reviewers, were saying that they thought the 3DS would not do well against the Cheap games available on smartphones now. Just to state the obvious, But what are the Top 3 selling games for the system so far? Can you get them on any smartphone? Enough said.
