Fortnite Is The First Unreal Engine 4 Game

Epic pulled back the curtain today on Fortnite, its new sandbox-style game for PC. The company revealed it's the first title using Unreal Engine 4.

We got a chance to get a closer look at Fortnite's enemies during our Comic Con panel. The game's bread and butter enemy is called the husk. This zombie-like foe that tries to overwhelm players' structures with their numbers. Unfortunately, the Fortnite's enemies also work in conjunction with each other. Smashers are big brutes who smash through players' walls, and trolls are sneaky little buggers who can phaze through walls and will sneak through a fort, opening door for husks, and stealing players stuff.

In order to keep back these creative foes, players will have to master their building skills, collect better materials from the world, and keep upgrading their fortress. Players have a lot of options to tweak their structure, adding doors, arches, and sniper perches to their building. Epic's first Unreal 4 project should bring out the architect in all of us when it comes out for PC later next year.

Epic provided several new screenshots of the game, and even included a before and after that highlights the transition from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4.

  • Sounds great. I'm in.

  • This game sounds awesome i cant wait to get my hands on it.
  • Apparently they don't know how to use the engine yet...

  • unreal engine 4 can't run on xbox 360, so now its more like an xbox 180.

  • Awesome! This game looks great and cannot wait to see the Unreal Engine 4.

  • Well they might downgrade it for the UE3 but I was wondering how they could do it with UE4 if that was for next gen consoles and release it but obviously its a PC exclusive. But might be on the Next Gen consoles - plus game looks pretty cool but not guarantee it be ground breaking does look kinda fun though definitely.

  • Yeah...so is the game they choose to reveal Unreal Engine 4 with? really?! A Minecraft clone?!?

Would of thought maybe something more epic like say.....Gears 4 on the next xbox.

  • Seems like a bit of a waste.

  • Any game that involves building and zombies is a Minecraft clone now?

  • First off the people that are saying this a game about protecting a house from zombies is a minecraft clone have obviously never played minecraft or nazi zombies. They are as irrational as the people who said the first Last of us trailer was a copy of the Dead Island trailer because it had a girl and a hallway in it. Also This doesn't really look like a next gen game. It looks like early PS3 and Xbox. I really wish they chose a game that would show the difference between unreal 3 and unreal 4. It kind makes me wonder if unreal 4 is even worth it
  • you can not make any assumptions based off 5 screens of the actual physics of the game, the graphics may be cartoony but that does not give you an actual idea of how they work.

  • wat a rip off but it looks like it could be fun

  • its sorta like minecraft but with tons more zombies and guns!

  • The graphics look terrible... hopefully they'll get better.

  • Husks?  Mass Effect crossover?!

  • Intresing

  • This game looks fun and the style is great..... to bad its not coming on consoles.

  • Well I'm now disappointed, I was expecting a full multiplatform launch, and with Epic's continual push for Unreal 4-supporting consoles, a next- gen launch. This game will show Sony & Microsoft, if they haven't already embraced Unreal 4, why they must, especially since PC can support it now. It looks fantastic, a gorgeous colourful art style and a potentially addictive twist on the tower defense formula, and if Dungeon Defenders' success is any indication its a formula that can still hit the market strong. Here's hoping for a next-gen console port later down the line! :)
