Nintendo Rep Says Unified Wii, 3DS eShop Is Coming

Nintendo could be uniting the eShops between its 3DS handheld and the upcoming Wii U. A customer-service rep explained in an email how the system would work.

Nintendo World Report published an e-mail purportedly from Nintendo customer service rep David Marshall.

"A unified account system will be implemented later this year with the launch of the Wii U," he wrote. "Eventually this same account system will be made compatible with Nintendo 3DS systems. At this time we have no additional details to offer and nothing to indicate how or if this will work outside the United States and Canada. In the meantime, if the system has a problem, taking it to an Authorized Service Center will maintain the Nintendo eShop account. If the system is stolen, we can transfer the account to a new system once we are provided with a valid police report."

We're reached out to Nintendo and are awaiting confirmation. In the meantime, what do you think? Is being able to divvy up your cash between 3DS and Wii U purchase in one online stop something you care about?

  • sounds awesome.

  • So does this mean you won't have to repurchase VC games on both systems? They don't explicitly say that, but in this day it's expected.
  • Sounds like a smart idea, too bad I never buy anything from that store, I mean why not use all the older consoles if you want to play them :D
  • Still not sold on WiiU...I'll keep my eye on it..but if I had to make a decision today it would be to NOT by a WiiU. Definitely not getting one launch day.
  • If I can transfer all my VC titles to the Wii U I will be sold. I have poured about 200.00 in titles over the last few years and I dont want to have to keep my Wii on the entertainment center just to play link to the past and super metroid
  • I hope they do this. But I also hope the system doesn't crash the way the Sony's servers crashed.

  • I hope you can transfer old wii VC games to the wii u without accessing the wii system so I can send the roughly $500 to the wii u from my broken wii.

  • That sounds very legit.

  • I wrote Nintendo a letter about 6 months ago explaining this idea to them in detail. I also added that some games should be playable on both the 3DS and Wii U, and that 2 Wii U's and 4 3DS' should be allowed on the account and share the purchased games (for families of 4 or more). I doubt they read my letter and I don't care, but I hope the second part of my letter comes true as well

  • Well, I think I'm a little confused. When I read the headline I thought maybe the entire catalogs from the Wii and 3DS VCs would be combined and made playable on either system. This just seems to be talking about the Nintendo Network ID and noting that you can use the same account on the 3DS and WiiU. What, if any, implications this has on the games available to purchase on either system seems unclear.

Am I misunderstanding this or not realizing the implications? I'm glad to know that my games will be able to be moved to a new system, but since they already announced games will transfer from Wii to WiiU I assumed this already.

Anyway, I'm dissapointed that it doesn't look like SNES games will be available on the 3DS.
  • Meh that is all

  • That would be cool if I wanted to buy Metroid for the 3DS and Super Metroid for the Wii U. Makes it easier to buy stuff with one unified card, instead of two separate cards.
  • If this means I don't have to add money separately to the WiiU and 3DS, it's great.

  • That sounds good. I like the 3DS E-Shop.

  • Not really, the only way this would really make a difference is if you send content back and forth.

  • Hopefully this means that Snes and N64 games are coming to the 3DS' virtual console. They could easily run on the handheld, so I've never Nintendo's decision to exclude them.
  • That's great news! The idea of having your money on both the Wii U and 3DS is also something I hope to see from this. Now, all we need is Nintendo to fix the coin values in Club Nintendo. They just changed it and made you get less coins for your games!

  • Yes! I want to be able to put all my Nintendo eCash in one place (like PSN for my PS3 or PSV). I also like the potential of being able to play a VC game on either system; or maybe a new game on either system (i.e. NSMB2).

  • Sounds cool.
