The lights are on
Sony has made a habit of redesigning its consoles as they age to not only put out a sexy new form factor for its consoles, but also to take advantage of decreased manufacturing costs and efficiencies. It looks like the PS3 may get another new version before all is said and done.
Japanese site Pocket News reports that Sony has filed paperwork with the FCC for a new model PS3 with the model code CECH-4001X, as opposed to the current 3000 series.
The pictures filed with the FCC appear to concern themselves with the new placement of the FCC info label, so it's not known what kind of capabilities the new system may have, if any.

Wonder what they are going to do to change the current model?
That's an interesting bit of news. If it's just a new design, perhaps it's a sort of prototype for the PS4's appearance.
Well that's fancy but I really don't have any use for it myself.
So they're announcing it on GamesCom
Considering how close we are to next-gen, it'll take a serious price drop to make this move an attractive one, although PS4 will likely carry a decent price tag, and people continue to buy PS3s, so either way this'll do them some good. If its true, I wonder how much smaller they'll be able to make the system. :)
