WayForward Promises More Shantae

Shantae: Risky's Revenge was one of DSiWare's obscure gems (the game has a Metacritic score of 85), and WayForward is promising a sequel, hopefully on the Wii U.

In an interview with Nintendojo.com at E3, WayForward's founder Voldi Way said that the company is working on a follow-up to Risky's Revenge. "I would expect to see it on, you know, Wii U," said Way, "I don’t want to commit to a time because it always gets – even though we have been working on it, you know, like I said – it gets pushed to the back burner, so originally we were hoping to have something for launch, but that’s clearly not going to happen."

Way didn't offer any details about whether it would be a retail or downloadable title, but it is in the works, so that's good news.

  • Never heard of this.............
  • Its nice to see the little games get some recognition.
  • I have a giraffe that thinks he's a dog. He barks, rolls over, chews on bones and even chases lions (cats). To appease him, I've changed his name to Spot, but "Spot" (real name Jimmy Jenkins) won't reform. What should I do?
  • Yes! these games are great
  • I do love myself a gypsy.

  • The sequel was really good. I'm glad that Wayforward is going to make more, I was just expecting it to be on the 3DS instead. Personally my favorite DSi ware game ever. For those who don't know what Shantae is, it's a 2D action-adventure side scrolling game. Think if it more of a Metroidvania style game and you get the right idea. I believe it's $10 on the eShop, but it is worth it. If you have a 3DS, Dsi, or DSi XL I highly recommend it.

  • Mod
I didn't even realize this was a franchise. I know they released one game on the GBC in 2002, and I remember GI gave it a 3 so I didn't think it was anything to write home about, but apparently other critics gave it rave reviews so it got a sequel a few years ago (which also got rave reviews).
  • I remember seeing a friend play Shantae: Risky's Revenge. I'll have to check it out. I generally try to support any obscure games I can so I'll put this with Mighty Switch Force, Mutant Mudds and VVVVVVV on my list of things to get on the eshop.
  • That picture reminds me of a shirt my mom gave to me. It has a picture of a Hawaiian girl on it and she's sitting like the girl from this article. My mom said she liked it because 'the girl looks like she's playing with her pussy.' Always loved that shirt.
  • That is probably the most sexy/arousing picture in Nintendo history!
  • YES!!!! I loved Risky's Revenge on, and I would highly recommend it. I'll be looking forward to the sequel

  • When I was a used car salesman, I found a GBC cart of this game under the passenger seat. It was actually kind of fun.

  • what would we do without her

  • HA! I remember this game!!

  • There are only 3 things that would get me to buy a Wii U. Before, there were only 2 - Phantasy Star Online 2 and Super Mario "Universe" (whichever is the next core Mario game; not the lazy New Super Mario spinoffs). Now I know that I will also buy a Wii U to play a new Shantae :) I hope it's 3D. I'd like to see a new, quality 3D platformer. There are very few out there; this year, we are getting Sly 4 and Epic Mickey 2. And that's great, but that's like it. Even the 3D Mario and Sonic games have gotten progressively more linear, trying to recapture their 2D gameplay in 3D. There's totally not enough games about exploration anymore - it's like that was a design ideal that died on the PS2. I want to see more 3D platformers.
  • Cool. Now I HAVE to get around to playing the DSi Ware one...

What? It's good to have motivation.

  • Never heard of it.

  • Nintendo needs to buy Wayforward as a first party dev.
  • Saw this in a bargain bin at a store once. I never knew that the games existed beforehand, but it looked like decent game.
  • This is a good thing.
