The lights are on
Activision confirmed there have been significant layoffs at Vancouver-based Radical Entertainment, the studio behind the Prototype franchise, and said it will no longer develop games for the publisher.
"Radical is a very talented studio and has been a great partner to Activision," a spokesperson told Game Informer. "Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience.
"Following an exploration of a wide range of options, it was determined that closing Radical Entertainment as a creative entity was the only option."
This decision means that Radical will not be independently developing any games going forward. There will, however, be some employees who will remain working for the company on other Activision Publishing projects, according to the publisher.
Activision clarified saying the studio is not shutting down entirely at this time. "We met with the team and are currently exploring various options for the future of the studio including a potential sale of the business,"
the spokesperson added.
"Our preference would be to keep the team together, however, it is too early to say anything further at this time."
Prototype 2 was released in April 2012. Radical Entertainment also released Scarface: The World Is Yours in 2006 and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction in 2005.
The developer employed around 90 people.
Correction: This story incorrectly stated Activision was closing Radical Entertainment. As of now, it will remain open, but in a much smaller capacity.
Awwwwwwwww, man :(
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was one of my favorites.
This sucks, at least Prototype 2 for the most part wrapped up the story. For the most part :'(
they should've made prototype 2 and make mercer the antagonist; bad idea i think...
Always a shame when a studio closes but of luck to the people that were laid off.
dam...well that sucks.
Im surprised Activision hasn't asked them to create COD games haha.
Yet another cod studio
Well then, it seems that the time for war on Activision has arisen.
I'm blaming Marvel for this. Anybody who's played Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction knows that Prototype was probably supposed to be a new Hulk game in the beginning. I always thought the reason you see a big DC Comics billboard when you start up that game is because Marvel signed that stupid deal with Sega, so they could ruin the Hulk franchise.
If Radical was still making Hulk games, they would probably be okay, because that franchise would've been so much more profitable.
that's gay as all get out, seriously the prototype series is one of the best open world games ever and this is coming from a guy who played the rockstar games, spiderman games, etc. how could the game not find a big enough audience? activision may be partly to blame, but it's mostly on the consumer and most consumers these days won't give anything without a really old franchise name or call of duty name a chance, so for the 90% of the consumers who buy games and may or may not read this, YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So another studio bites the dust, that's a shame.
Truly saddened to hear it. Prototype 1 was fun game and the second was amazing. Activision needs to support more unique ideas such as that of Prototype not keep milking COD... sad when numbers rule talent.
