The lights are on
Sega Europe said today that as a result of a recent restructure, it is closing its offices in France, Germany, Spain, Australia, and Benelux.
“Sega is entering a new and exciting phase that will position the company as a content led organization maximizing sales with strong and balanced IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise”, said Jurgen Post, COO of SEGA Europe. “The company will benefit from a clear focus and realigned strategy for our digital business and packaged goods and we are confident that this will lead to a successful future.”
According to a press release, Koch Media have been appointed to assist SEGA with distribution across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Spain of packaged goods, Level03 Distribution and 5 Star Games will assist with distribution across Benelux and Australia respectively which will be implemented from July 1 2012.
Sega said all other territories will continue to run as before.
Geez, that's a lot of closings.
SEGA has one game that is successful and thats the TOTAL WAR series. SEGA needs to take Square Enix example and realize that their internally developed games are failing, and they should try and purchase good western developers. Square Enix has a lineup of Hitman Absolution, Thief 4, Tomb Raider and the next Deus Ex game coming this quarter and next year. Not to mention they own a minority share in Rocksteady so they get profits from the Batman games. Japanese companies need to heed Square Enixs example. The world is shifting towards western developed games in general and if they want to survive they need to adapt not continue making 4000 sequels to a game that once was great.
No Dreamcast 2 ?!?! ... JK, JK.
In sure those who are out of jobs are thrilled with Sega's "new and exciting phase."
It's so sad that a company that once threatened to take the crown from Nintendo has now come to this. I think it's safe to say that the Sega we all fondly remember is never coming back. We would all do well to grieve and just move on.

Ahahahahahah...Oh sorry. Okay, really mates: how is closing down branches "an exciting phase?"
As much as I wish it were so, I sincerely doubt that Sega ever becomes a solid company again so long as they continue to put out Sonic shovelware and don't expand on their new IP that could give them hope.
i guess sega really does what nintendon't... seeing how nintendo hasn't closed any of it's offices.
They just need to make Shenmue 3, and then all will be right with the world.
sega how sad you aren't what you once were.... now let yu make shenmue 3 before you crumble or he dies...seriously :(
Sad. I didn't know they owned anything other than Sonic.
