Criterion Takes Over Entire Need For Speed Series

Gamers were ecstatic when developer Criterion signed on for its first Need for Speed title in 2009, and with its second NFS game coming this fall in Most Wanted, the studio is poised to take full control of the franchise.

We talked to Criterion vice president Alex Ward at E3, and he revealed that from now on Criterion will be in charge of the entire franchise. When asked whether he thought EA's original plan to release a Need for Speed title of some kind every year was watering down the series, Ward said, "Maybe it's been that way in the past, but that's changed this year with what we're doing… Our stamp's going to be in everything you see in Need for Speed and Burnout going forward in the future. It's not going to be spread anymore across different companies. Different studios have had a crack at it - it's definitely a Criterion gig now.

"Going forward now, with Most Wanted and what we'll do in the future [will have], shall we say, a strong Criterion involvement," he explained. "I'm personally involved in how the cars drive, how the game will play out, how connected they are, and what the features are."

The studio would not clarify if Criterion will directly develop every Need for Speed title, as Ward intimated, or simply oversee the series, when we asked them after our interview.

Ward was, however, clear that Criterion will have control over which Need for Speed titles will come out in the future. As of now the franchise covers different areas with its Shift, Most Wanted, Underground, and Hot Pursuit imprints, and although there's no definite road map for what kind of future Need for Speed games Criterion and EA will release, Ward expressed interest in one all-encompassing NFS title. "I think it would be amazing in the future if there was one big game that had all of these in it. That would be amazing."

As for the Burnout franchise, Criterion definitely has not forgotten the series and its many fans. The studio put out the downloadable Burnout Crash! last year, but Ward was mum on the future of Burnout other than to say that the developer "[thinks] about it all the time.

"I think something big will have to happen soon to enable us to do some of the things we want to do."

  • Seeing Criterion take over Need for Speed once was a nice treat, that rightfully shamed Black Box, and also gave them time to spend TWO years working on a Nfs title of their own.

But let's face it. EA's old-school NFS speed sucks compared to Burnout. And it's still really, REALLY stupid that EA hasn't rebooted Road Rash yet, despite BOTH Black Box and Criterion working on prototypes in the past.

Burnout needs to return. So does Road Rash. Even a new IP - no one's made a water racing game in awhile. But Need for Speed? Needs to go away for awhile. Or forever - I really don't care about that franchise. Never did.

But if Criterion is going to make another Burnout like Paradise, than don't bother. Open world nonsense? Forced social features? Ugh - the thought of "autolog" forcing it's way into Burnout makes me sick. Maybe Criterion should just work on a downloadable "Burnout All-Stars" that combines tracks and content from Burnout 1, 2, Takedown, Revenge and Dominator, and redoes them all in the 360 Revenge Engine. Release that on PSN, so I can play it, and I'll be happy.
  • Good!

  • Very good

Fine by me. Their Hot Pursuit was the first time in a long time I cared about and liked a NFS game and Most Wanted looks great too. Criterion has been my favorite racing dev since Burnout 2 and as cool as this is, I'd love to see them make a new Burnout sometime soon. Doesn't matter if it's Paradise 2 (first one is one of my favorite games this entire generation) or something like Takedown, heck, even try their hand at aa new IP again. tl;dr, I love Criterion games and this is a good decision.

  • good gooood

  • Not sure if I am happy about this or not...I really enjoyed Black boxes last effort in The Run, especially the online which was amazing.

  • Wow!!!! A horrible company is trying to take over the greatest racing ever made. Its a sad day for true fanatics of the series. I bought new Hot Pursuit and I sold it that same day. Horrible game!!! No story, no cinematics, no car tune-ups or customizations! Second generation NFS games were KING and always will be. I am estatic to say I won't be buying games this franchise until Criterion is completely off the project! Stop trying to make Need for Speed like Burnout which in my opinion is a Need for Speed ripoff franchise!!! Bring back EA!!!
  • So Criterion is hypnotized by EA. Wow.

  • Now NFS is officially dead. What a shame, considering last year's The Run was pretty good in my opinion.
  • just dont make it to over the top

  • I am really hoping for another Burnout game. Maybe something similar to Paradise in the whole freedom department.

  • plz criterion go back to street racing now!!!! :D they were the reason i bought NFS at all. All thats left now if midnight club and they havent done *** since LA/Tokyo.

  • I am okay with this
