Nintendo 3DS XL Announced

Nintendo revealed the 3DS XL, a revision of the original 3DS handheld that boasts a 90 percent extra viewing area.

The top screen measures 4.88 inches and the lower screen is now 4.18 inches. It also offers longer battery life. The memory card is also being increased to 4 GB. The 3DS XL will include an AC adapter in North American but not in Japan. It will have to be purchased separately, but you can still use other adapters from other Nintendo devices.

The new handheld is coming in Black, Black x Blue, and Black x Red on August 19 in North America for $199. It releases on July 28 in Japan and Europe.

Correction: Nintendo of America confirmed the 3DS XL includes an AC Adapter. The story was updated.

  • Holy cow that's a big handheld!
  • Mod
    YOU'RE KIDDING.
  • People are gonna be mad that there's no extra circle pad...
  • So is the extra circle pad gonna work with this version?
  • FML and yet still, no second circle pad.
  • last ditch effort for the handheld market...
  • HOLY CRAP THATS BIG. And ugly too. Imagine the resolution of a DS game on that!
  • Watch it go down to 160 in a matter of months
  • The better battery life alone is making me want to buy it, but how could it not sport the second circle pad? Seriously, Nintendo?
  • Brace yourselves, the trolls are coming... But really, Nintendo is going to get some hate for this, even though I don't care, and I bought the 3DS at launch. I could care less that a new version came out, seeing as its only bigger with more life.
  • Finally, after all these years someone designs a handheld device with Hagrid in mind!
  • lol didn't Miyamoto just say that they weren't doing another version?
  • " The 3DS LL will not include an AC adapter and will have to be purchased separately..."

What in the... what is that nonsense, and no additional joy pad? I'm passing on this. Not even the better battery life is enough to make me want to get it.

EDIT: Though those look like flat colours, instead of the gloss of the original. That is a plus in my book, still not enough to make me upgrade though.

EDITx2: I take back what I said, the article has been updated to reflect that there will indeed by an AC Adapter included. I am kind of weighing on getting this now. Maybe if my friend picks one up, I can see how I like the resolutions on it, and the way it feels in my hand.
  • Even with more memory/bigger screen it is pretty ugly, and only comes with basic colors. I still perfer the original 3DS, it looks more sleek and nicer looking compared to the XL.
  • Wow.  Just...wow.

Will this go the way of the DSi XL?

And what's with the lack of a second circle pad?

  • Wait... Didn't what's his name (Nintendo executive) specifically say that they won't be doing anything like this? I'm quite certain that he said the next handheld they release will be a new handheld and not another iteration of the 3DS. dahell? lol
  • Cant wait to play next smash bros. on that big momma
  • I want that white 3ds.
