Could TimeSplitters 4 Become A Free-to-Play Title?

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli sees a free-to-play future for triple-A games, and his company is trying to make it happen. This might even include TimeSplitters 4.

In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Yerli set the course for his company, saying he wants all its future products to be free-to-play, including the creation of a social-entertainment platform called GFACE. This service would feature all free-to-play titles from Crytek as well as those from other companies. Crytek's recently announced Warface would appear on this platform.

Toward the end of the interview, naturally, the future of the TimeSplitter's franchise is broached. When asked about TimeSplitters 4, Yerli eventually says, "I love the picture of a TimeSplitters running on GFACE."

The timing dovetails nicely with the recent fan petition that went up asking for the game.

  • I thought of this when they first spoke of going F2P. I think it would be interesting, but it'd depend entirely on Crytek's interpretation of what "free to play" really means. If it's a pay-to-win sort of setup, I'd rather not see another Timesplitters on the platform, but I think Crytek is a better company than that.
  • So possibly, wouldn't mind being able to play Timesplitters again =)

  • Just had to fire up timesplitters for an old fashioned LAN party and it wad still great. Can't wait to see if they bring it back.
  • Hopefully they make it like Tribes: Ascends' F2P and not like BF:P4F
  • I just wish timesplitters 2 or 3 worked on my xbox.
  • Alas, the more I hear of the next generation consoles the less excited I become. Crytek wants to do all of their titles after Crysis 3 as free-to-play (according to Eurogamer and Joystiq). Mircosoft is consumed with Kinect, Smart Glass, and television as opposed to fresh IPs. Sony is hurting financially...Nintendo Wii U has potential but it is questionable if it will ever be utilized. To me, a F2P version of Timesplitters 4 is a terrible idea, a money making gimmick, and an erosion of creative juices.
  • As long as it's made, I don't care what business model they use.
  • Wait, I thought Timesplitters was a FPS...?
  • I hope not, one of the appeals of TimeSplitters was the campaign, particularly of Future Perfect. I understand multiplayer, but it cannot be TimeSplitters without a campaign and multiplayer. I honestly don't know too much about F2P, but I dont see how a campaign would work with the F2P model.
  • MAKE IT HAPPEN!!1!1111!ELEVEN

Sorry, but TimeSplitters has defined my childhood a lot :)

  • Good. I mention this possibility on every outlet I possibly can, including that Facebook page. Timesplitters is known for multiplayer, and F2P multiplayer shooters are successful - just look at Team Fortress 2 and Tribes Ascend and a ton more games. Timesplitters 4 would definitely work as a F2P shooter on PC. And PS3 and 360 if Crytek wanted to do it. Or the next consoles. Heck, the model for microtransactions is even there already. They always had loads and loads of player characters and skins available for multiplayer. Just make those $0.99 a pop, and people will pump TONS of money into the game. Team Fortress 2 may have a monopoly on silly hats, but a F2P Timesplitters COULD have a monopoly on monkey characters!
  • Please no how about that doesn't happen with f2p I suspect the new timesplitters would have some of its corners cut (awesome map editor, ai matches, more than likely the cool campaign) not to mention this is the one fps I prefer staying on consoles and well if its f2p that pretty much cuts the chances of that happening

Crytek I would love to see TS4 but please don't start that f2p thing until after its finished

  • I guess I'm in the minority of people. I thought the TimeSplitters games were terrible.
  • This'll be awesome if it happens. Free to play for TS4? Sign me up!

  • Heh, I remember Timesplitters 2 from "Shaun of the Dead". I'm all for free-to-play games, so I hope this becomes a reality.
  • I just don't see how'd it work in TS4. Would it be PC only? Would there still be single player? Split screen? How would they incorporate this F2p design into this game?

  • Never played Timsplitters :O. Is it fun?
  • Future Perfect was the bomb! WOOOO!
