Microsoft Tying Rewards To Achievements This Fall

Not everyone is crazy about Xbox 360 achievements, but those of us who get a little giddy when they hear that boop-beep sound could actually cash in on them this fall. An official tweet from the Xbox Live Rewards account says players will have a new way to earn rewards in a few months, related to achievements.

The tweet is more of a tease than an announcement, in spite of what they might say. "We've hit 50,000 followers, which means it's time for an announcement! Coming Fall: a new way to earn Rewards based on your Achievements!"

The Xbox Live Rewards program lets players earn prizes, including Microsoft points, for doing things such as searching on Bing, filling out surveys, and performing certain tasks on Xbox Live. And now it looks like you'll be rewarded for actually playing games. Maybe.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. We'll have to wait and see if it'll be a sponsored, limited-time-only offer, or a long-term part of the program. One thing's for certain: It sounds more interesting and appealing than searching for stuff on Bing.

  • Interesting.
  • Brownman is gonna be rich.
  • Cool stuff.

  • it'sa reward for sufferign through using Bing!

  • hopefully this will come to xbox live rewards in australia too..

  • Sony, please do something similar, I have so many damn trophies I want to capitalize on.
  • I've been waiting for something like this. Finally get something out of your achievements that's great. I used to not care about achievements, but now I'm an achievement junkie like everyone else. Gotta get dem all achievements.
  • I saw this yesterday, but that doesn't mean I'm any less excited. I'm curious to see how this works out, especially with the number of boosters on Xbox Live. I would gladly rent some easy thousand point games for free Microsoft Points. Maybe this will even be retroactive.
  • Guessing you'll get a few points for getting easy achievements in exclusives like Halo 4 near their release.
  • I swear I had this idea years ago. Dang, why did I not copyright it!!! Curse me!!!
  • Hopefully it's not a reward for earning X amount of gamerscore over a certain period. My days of achievement hunting are done. I will gladly take a reward for my 117,000+ gamerscore, though.
  • Hey, knock Bing all you want... I've cashed in on 15$ worth of Amazon gift cards in like 3 months. Considering that's from just logging on and searching 20 random things in a matter of 45 seconds each work day, I'm pleased.
  • They do a similar thing on Raptr. You get free or discounted gaming related items depending on how much you've played a certain game. I'm somewhat of an achievement getter so this sounds like it could be beneficial, especially if Microsoft points are included.

  • WHAAATTT!!! I TOLD THIS TO SONY. NOW LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!

  • Nintendo recently announced something similar to this with regards to Miiverse. Could this be a counter by Microsoft, or something that's been a long time coming? A little of both if you ask me.

Although to be fair, Ubisoft (and maybe others) have been doing this for years already. UPlay may not be huge, but it was cool in games like Assassin's Creed, where I could take those points and use them to purchase rewards. Hopefully everyone adopts this.
  • Sounds good to me.

  • Which is how it should have been set up in the first place. I'm not using Bing unless I just happen to be on my Xbox and not in a game and wanna look something up real fast, which happens almost never.

  • I always thought you should get awarded for achievements and trophies. I never cared about getting them bc you don't get anything. XBOX/PS3 should let you rack up points for these achievements and let you buy items from the MARKETPLACE/PSN STORE such as themes/avatars/movies/games/accesories/MS points or cash (PS3)....then I would actually try to go for them.

  • Am I the only one who remembers how short-lived and forgotten the first Rewards attempt was?
