Microsoft Unveils New Tablet: Surface

Microsoft today announced a new tablet called Surface at a press event in Los Angeles this afternoon.

There will be two different versions, one for Windows 8 Pro and another for Windows RT. Below are the system specs as well as the added features. Microsoft said it's not talking about pricing or release date just yet. Be sure to check out the gallery at the bottom.

Software takes center stage: Surface sports a full-sized USB port and a 16:9 aspect ratio – the industry standard for HD. It has edges angled at 22 degrees, a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use, letting the hardware fade into the background and the software stand out.

VaporMg: The casing of Surface is created using a unique approach called VaporMg (pronounced Vapor-Mag), a combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch. Starting with magnesium, parts can be molded as thin as .65 mm, thinner than the typical credit card, to create a product that is thin, light and rigid/strong.

Integrated Kickstand: The unique VaporMg approach also enables a built-in kickstand that lets you transition Surface from active use to passive consumption – watching a movie or even using the HD front- or rear-facing video cameras. The kickstand is there when needed, and disappears when not in use, with no extra weight or thickness.

Touch Cover: The 3 mm Touch Cover represents a step forward in human-computer interface. Using a unique pressure-sensitive technology, Touch Cover senses keystrokes as gestures, enabling you to touch type significantly faster than with an on-screen keyboard. It will be available in a selection of vibrant colors. Touch Cover clicks into Surface via a built-in magnetic connector, forming a natural spine like you find on a book, and works as a protective cover. You can also click in a 5 mm-thin Type Cover that adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.

Comments
  • Everyone wants to be in the tablet buisness. The keyboard seems a little too thin for my taste as well.
EDIT: Looking over the specs again, it doesn't seem that bad. I wonder what the price is.
  • Awesome. Looks very thin, I can't wait to use Windows 8 on many upcoming tabs.
  • Looks like a tablet worth getting.  I'm liking what I'm seeing.  Hopefully the price is right.

  • Or as i will call it, freakishly thin laptop
  • Microsoft developing a tablet, interesting. Being someone who sees no value in Ipads or other tablets, this just seems a little... Bland, even with Windows 8.
  • Windows 8 looks nice, but looks a little too busy for my taste. Other than that, I would love to have it if the price is right...

  • found the Tablet i need to get so to use my soon to be released Windows 8,RT & Xbox Smart Glass.. just need a price tag.

  • I think this looks brilliant.

  • I think this is another "Microsoft late to the party" like the windows phone. I don't care for the tablets, and this probably won't make me want one any more. Any pricing details?
  • Yep...everybody wants to get into the tablet market. Can't blame them.
  • Ehh I just really am not looking forward to Win8. From what I understand it is a good step forward in terms of resource usage but I don't like the designed for touch use interface. On a tablet it will probably be okay though...time will tell if this is a buy or not
  • That video was really stupid
  • As far as green goes, my jar of mayo is a grinch.
  • it always amazes me how much of haters people can be towards something they havent even seen run or know what kind of features it will have. basically right now its just to see and no one can say this thing doesnt look good cuz it does lets leave it at that. stop being hating on things just because you cant afford them
  • I hate tablets, but this one actually looks pretty neat.

  • As much as I want it to succeed, I don't think it will sell. Too many people already have the new iPads or the iPad2. Microsoft is going to have to put a lot of cool features on it (xbox compatibility is a must) along with a lot of apps and games. My friend has a windows phone and he says there aren't that many good choices in the app store. good luck microsoft! I hope you succeed!
  • It's cool that it has the Type Cover.

  • Seems like Microsoft is starting to do things right...
  • Didn't MS have a table that was touch screen? I remember watching a vid about it a few years ago.
