Reader Discussion: It’s Father’s Day

It's Father's Day today, and we want to know if you have gaming memories with your father.

My dad, while always supportive of my hobby (unless somebody needed to rake the yard), has never been into video games. He, my brother, and I dabbled in Myst together, and I got him to try out Guitar Hero once (he's an expert bluegrass mandolin player), but that's about it. These days he watches Netflix on the Wii, but that's about as close as he gets to playing a game console.

How about you? Did you and your father play a lot of video games together?

Be sure to check out our special edition Resident Evil 4 Father's Day Replay guest starring Dan Ryckert's father, Paul Ryckert who knows me only as Ramis, because he started calling me that after he decided I sound like Harold Ramis the actor/director.

  • My dad is a confirmed redneck and the only games he likes are racing games. I remember playing Bill Elliot's Nascar with him on NES. I did however get him to play Tecmo Bowl one time. He got ticked at me when I kicked his ass :) Now he plays Nascar 2000-something on my old Gamecube.

  • I once got grounded by my step dad for laughing at him as he was cussing up a storm at the fact that kept dying while playing Mega Man.

  • When I was younger my dad threw his back out at work and ended up having a slipped disk- he was out of work for like a year. And for whatever reason, although he had not tried a game since Super Mario Bros. 3 when they got me an NES, he started playing the game Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey for PS1 and LOVED it. He was obsessed with it. He played it the whole time he was recovering, trying to go back and resuce all the Mudokans or whatever. He loved the sequel, too. And he couldn't get over how the game had a 'fart' button. I don't even know why we got the game in the first place but to this day he loves it and will pull it out from time to time and play it.

  • My dad and I played Super Mario RPG together when it first came out. We got stuck on the Axem Rangers for two days until we figured out you had to kill the pink one first so she couldn't heal anymore. Other than that, he'll dabble in Need For Speed or MLB The Show every now and then.

  • Before I got a tv in my room, my dad would love to watch me play and fail!  The old NES games were ruthless.  He loved it when the dog in Duck Hunt would laugh at me!

  • My dad has never played any video games, but I play with my kids all the time. A couple of my kids enjoy board games like Risk and Pirates Cove so we do that too, but for the most part video games have become the new family time activity for those willing to change with the times.

  • watching my dad play quake 3 arena and doom, and watching my grandfather play mario on the nes, yea he really did play mario.
