Twitter Reaction: Neversoft Taking On Call Of Duty

Activision's army of Call of Duty developers grew one stronger today. Neversoft, the team responsible for most of the Tony Hawk games, is now entrenched in Call of Duty development. To what capacity – whether the team is starting a new project or is assisting Treyarc with Black Ops II – remains to be seen. Activision now has Infinity Ward, Treyarc, Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software, and Neversoft all prepped for or in active development of new Call of Duty games.

I asked my Twitter followers what they thought of Neversoft switching gears to take on this franchise, and also kept an eye on an #Neversoft feed to see what the Internet at large was thinking. Here's just a small slice of the most interesting and amusing responses:

  • I wish more people remembered what Activision did to Neversoft.
  • At this point I honestly think Activision is like- You want to make a shooter? We'll call it Call of Duty, give the same Multiplayer, but let you have control of the shooter and make MILLIONS!
  • I don't really follow Call of Duty, but in reading these articles, it came to my attention Raven Software is on map making duty. And just the other day I was wondering if we'd ever see a follow-up to Wolverine, or why X-Men Legends and it's sequel weren't on XBL/PSN with HD treatment (or no HD, I just want to play them again!). And instead, Raven, a talented developer that I used to be proud was from Madison when I lived in Milwaukee (though I am not a WI native), is now on CoD duty instead of producing interesting fresh content like X-Men Legends, Wolverine Uncaged, and Singularity. It's a shame if so.
  • Are Activision giving every studio the chance to develop a Call of Duty game?
  • This is a great new feature. I liked it

  • Activision is putting way to many studios into CoD. If their sales for COD games go down due to franchise fatigue, they will be absolutely screwed. If they want to future prof themselves, they desperately need new IPs.
  • Vivendi has mentioned looking to drop Activision-Blizzard. Is this a reason why? Cash out before WoW declines anymore (it's not at it's peak) and the CoD luster fades?

It's a short-term boost, but when you're playing with stakes that big...
  • WAIT A SECOND Raven is working on COD.....okay now I'm mad I love Raven they make awesome games get them off Call of Duty(I LOVED Singularity highly underrated in my opinion)
  • I think Call of Duty should die with next gen to let in new innovation that other people actually play and look at. I am not talking battlefield 4 etc etc. Just something new. This whole thing with Neversoft is like "wut" to me. I feel like their just beating a dead horse.. still.

  • I'm tired of hearing about Call Of Duty these days. I really am.
  • I imagined this being much worse then it is

  • Alright, another company trying to beat a dead horse? I think it's time to stop with the Call of Duty crap guys. They're probably making it for the next gen consoles. I do too believe that the next console wold be the last one. COD fan themselves are tired of the same FPS with a different 6 on the title. The game has been worded out already. Halo producers were suppose to stop at Halo 2. (They did not) Time to move forward and raise the bar. The consoles are dead. They are so far behind the PC gamers with the hardware that they have. I love consoles but tech is advancing too fast too quick. The game industry is in a tough spot right now. Lets see what happens in the future. P.S Keep moving forward.
  • idk really...

  • Just think all those companies could be doing new games that are not CoD IP connected.

  • Time for Bernie to retire?  I'm thinking so...

  • All I want is some new IP's. I truly hope the CoD series takes a huge dip in sales to open their eyes a little.
  • pixel metal wins

also this is just so ridiculously stupid....why not use all the friggin money theyve made to create a new ip....just put "from the studio that brought you cod" and people will do backflips for it...instead they just keep dragging this dead body around and activision keep trying to defib it with more and more people (dev studios. put it in the ground already

  • How about you take that money and put dedicated servers on consoles!
  • Mod
Did not know Twitter responses count as "news" now. Anyway, I know the whole "oh, it's cool to hate CoD now" thing but... well, I don't exactly "hate"the series, I'm just really burnt out and bored with it. I don't like seeing devs that should be doing new things being put on to help a series that needs a break. Activision needs to be careful before they run this series into the ground and the fanbase they rely on so well gets bored themselves.
  • Hrm, maybe the new Bungie "Destiny" game is a new CoD too!!! Yeah, no. Activision, take it from a gamer, and stop. Just stop. This is enough with the Call of Duty, and you are going to keep going with this until you have single-handedly killed off every game dev. I care about.
