Diablo III Tops May Software Sales

U.S. market research firm NPD released its monthly sales figures today. Overall total games sales took a dive year-over-year, dropping from $718.9 million to $516.5 million for May 2012, a 28 percent decline.

Xbox 360 led console sales for the month, selling 160,000 units. Sony and Nintendo have not released hardware numbers as of this time. “All hardware platforms, save the 3DS, saw a decline in unit sales versus last year," noted NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "The Nintendo DS, however, did realize a 35 percent lift over April 2012, catalyzed by the May 20th price reduction on the DSi and DSi XL.

"Even with the price drop on the DS platform, 3DS sales realized an increase of 17 percent over last May.”

Below are the top 10 best-selling games in the U.S. for May 2012:

  1. Diablo III
  2. Max Payne 3
  3. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
  4. Prototype 2
  5. NBA 2K12
  6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  7. Sniper Elite V2
  8. Battlefield 3
  9. Dragon's Dogma
  10. Just Dance 3

"Diablo III is the top selling title for May, the first time since July 2010 that a PC-only game accomplished this feat.  Since the game launched day and date through digital distribution as well, full sales of the title are some multiple of what is reflected in the retail sales," Frazier added.

"Starcraft II was the title that topped the best-seller list in July 2010, a testament to the power of the Blizzard brand in PC gaming.”

  • Sorry, didn't enjoy the Beta like I did Diablo 1 and 2, wasn't interested in paying 60 only to pay subs and deal with the temptations of an auction house on top of that.
  • Glad to see it's doing well. I only hope Blizzard will do something about their DRM. It's a massive pain in the ass even for the strongest connections.
  • If they had an offline mode, it might have been the best selling pc games of all time.
  • That's awesome. While it can't surpass diablo II,(Top 5 game all time) Diablo III is still one of the best games i have played in a long time. Max Payne 3 was also pretty good, better than LA Noire, but not quite up to Red Dead level. Also happy to see NBA 2k12 is still up there, shows if u put great effort into a non NFL sports game they can still make a ton of money.

  • Surprised sniper elite v2 sold more than dragons dogma, but i guess nut shots are nut shots...
  • IMO the game just isn't very fun. I played Diablo 2 on and off for 10 years. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I just don't think 3 has the same replayability to it. It lacks the freedom that D2 had, like PKing and creating/joining games based on anything, not just quests. MF runs aren't nearly as satisfying. Also, inferno mode is stupid hard. I wonder if anyone has actually made it through inferno on hardcore mode.

  • I hope Diablo gets ported over to consoles, then I'd buy it. Though I wish I had a most excellent PC to play it on, I am not willing to fork over mula for one just for Diablo. That's a pretty penny. Here's hoping for a not so awesome console version in the future!
  • Glad to see Sniper Elite V2 is on there; Rebellion was one of my favorite developers last generation. Also, I am not surprised to see Diablo III at the top.

I myself took a pass with Diablo III; I heard it was far too short, also it isn't even done yet and it had no offline support + payable auction. Oh well, Torchlight II looks phenomenal!
  • So many 3's...

  • It's too bad it's doing so well, maybe if it had started off rocky Blizzard would have given in to demands for an offline mode, now they have no reason to since they're making bank.

  • Played Diablo 2 as a kid years later Diablo 3 has sucked me in. I can feel PC gaming have its hold on me. As a longtime console gamer its nice to switch things up.

  • Loved Diablo 2, now I want to see this on console.

  • So glad Dragon's Dogma is up there. Love that game.
  • i want diablo so bad. but i hate to have to play it online. i have heard to many horror stories of getting knocked off online. i for one would be on that list. i live in the country = bad internet connections.
  • GRFS!!!

  • The industry needs new hardware to bring some excitement back and reinvigorate developers. I think both Sony and MS are going to look on the days of the 360 and PS3 with a lot of regrets. They went too far on HW specs, lost a ton of money, and they let the cycle go to long without a refresh. Honestly, I am not a rich man, but I can afford to buy a $300 to $500 console every 5 years and I wouldn't feel fleeced about having to do so if it produced some innovation and better games.
  • If anyone has even a slight interest at all I'd recommend the game.

  • Starcraft and Diablo are the only franchises that have lured me from my consoles (well, I did get Spore, but that didn't last very long). I just wish I didn't have an archaic PC atm :/
