A Retro Studios Zelda Not Entirely Out Of The Question

In an interview with IGN, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto said that handing the Zelda reigns to Retro Studios isn't an impossible idea, but it is an unlikely one.

Retro Studios developed the Metroid Prime games, as well as the recent Donkey Kong Country Returns, so it has a good track record. It sounds like Miyamoto is confident in Retro's ability to create a quality Zelda title, but there are factors that would make it difficult to develop the game with the Nintendo team based in Japan, and Retro based in Austin, Texas.

Miyamoto told IGN, "Traditionally I think that the Zelda team has always had a close contact with anyone who's working on a Zelda game. If you were going to have that happen in the US at Retro, that would be kind of difficult for them to be able to coordinate. Certainly they're too busy for that sort of thing right now. It would probably require me to be involved to a great extent as well, so I would have to get over quite a bit too. I'd probably have to live in Texas... [laughs]"

Neither Nintendo nor Miyamoto are telling anybody what Retro is currently working on, but apparently it is keeping the studio very busy. Rumors have pointed towards a new Star Fox, or another entry into the Metroid franchise, but it is all conjecture.

  • I'd prefer Retro to work on Metroid-Star Fox fusion saga. Still, Retro + any Nintendo IP equals win.
  • Jes that Link looks fantastic.  Still would like to see a new Retro studios Metroid before another Zelda.

  • I would love to see them make a Zelda game. I wanna see how they approach the series.
  • I hope Retro is working on an entirely new IP that can become as beloved and successful as zelda or mario.
  • I just want Retro to come back to Metroid.
Come back, Retro. Metroid hasn't been the same with Ninja Theory.
    EDIT: Team Ninja, my bad.
  • This would be glorious. Retro is unstoppable. They would definitely deliver the best Zelda experience to date it this happens.
  • Orrrrrrrrrrrr....... MAKE ANOTHER METROID PRIME GAME!!
  • I would love to see Miyamoto in Texas, just to see how he reacts to how crappy it is
  • He seems to hint that while its possible, its currently not happening.

Very depressing. While I am not aware of how exactly Nintendo runs its development of games, I think its odd that he says that they "would have to be in constant, close, communication with the Zelda team." Why not just let them take the reigns entirely? That is sort of the idea of letting someone else make it for once?

But he does point out that he would likely have to move to Texas to oversee the project, and that to me is sort of a more realistic restriction.
  • I can't believe Retro didn't announce anything at E3.

By far my biggest disappointment of E3.

I honestly don't care what game it is, Metroid, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, bring it on.

  • If they do a Zelda game, I want everyone to talk, no text. Yeah, Yeah, curse me all you want, but Zelda needs a few changes and this is it (besides coming out with a game that uses Unreal Engine 4).
  • Whatever Retro's working on is probably amazing.

  • Ok all this means to me is this: Interviewer: Would handing of the Zelda fanchise to a North Ameica based studio be a good move for the series? Miyamoto:"Traditionally I think that the Zelda team has always had a close contact with anyone who's working on a Zelda game. [laughs]" Translation Miyamoto: The US already has the Xbox, they can't have Zelda.
  • Have a Star Fox game that is NOTHING like Other M.
  • i would love a new metroid game similar to the first on for gamecube, that game was amazing and a masterpiece for its time.

  • Oh I didn't know Retro was on a hush-hush project for Nintendo, hopefully it's a Metroid!

  • The Legend of Zelda series could use some fresh blood. I grew tired of Skyward Sword making it and Majora's Mask the only console games in the series I have given up on. Skyward Sword's bird travel drove me nuts and I feel like the whole series is degrading into a one trick gimmick per entry. I also think it is time for voices. The stammering grunts and moans of The Skyward Swords cast were stupid considering how good they looked. I used to think that certain series should be left alone, but after playing Lords of Shadow and seeing footage of the new Devil May Cry I personally am ready for a different take on Legend of Zelda.
  • "Certainly they're too busy for that sort of thing right now"..... Why must you toy with us Mr. Miyamoto? Just tell us what Retro game is coming out so I can get out my wallet and just give you the money now.

  • Ain't nothing wrong with living in Texas! We have over 40 game development companies between Austin and DFW!
  • Retro studios is in Texas??!! Then why I am reading this?
