Gabe Newell Makes A Surprise Appearance In A Kickstarter Video

Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, makes a random appearance in a Kickstarter video for a sword fighting game.

The video and the Kickstarter project comes from Neal Stephenson, a science fiction author who wants to make a realistic motion controlled sword fighting game.

In the video, Newell is seen smithing a crowbar, and Stephenson asks him, "Is that about ready?" to which Mr. Newell replies, "These things -- they take time." Apparently Newell and Stephenson are friends, and Valve's employees have attended sword training at Stephenson's Subutai Corporation. According to Newell, who spoke with Kotaku about his appearance, all the smithing equipment is his own and he has a forge in his garage.

The video is actually really funny throughout, so it's worth watching outside of Newell's appearance. I don't know how interested I am in playing a realistic sword fighting simulation personally, but Stephenson is passionate enough to make me interested. You can check out the Kickstarter project and its accompanying video here.

  • I'm still curious what console(s) its being released on, if PC what do you need to play it?
  • Sounds cool, but I think I'll stick with the unrealistic badassery of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. (Loved Gabe's cameo BTW)

  • What better way to attract attention?

  • This was actually really funny.

  • next he should randomly walk by in the simpsons, muttering "half life 3"

  • There's already a game like this. It's called the legend of zelda: skyward sword ^.^

Edit: or the sparring mini game in wii sports resort lol
  • Hehe thats cool.

  • Gabe really loves trolling us, huh?

  • This was actually a fairly clever kickstarter video.

  • Lmfao random and freaking FORGE in your garage?? how much freaking money you got already?
  • Mod
I watched this last night through Neil Gaiman's Tumblr since I'm a bit of a Stephenson fan. Didn't recognize Gabe Newell, though, even as I noticed the crowbar and thought of Half-Life. Still, if he's interested in developing a game and is very rigid about quality control, Gabe Newell is a very good friend to have for that.

I admire Stephenson's passion for swordfighting, as I admire the numerous passions that inform his writing, but I'm skeptical about whether or not modern technology is as advanced as Stephenson would like it to be in order to fulfill his vision.

Still, I'll chip in a few dollars. Also, I didn't realize he released a new novel last year. I'll have to check that out.
  • Why weren't you at E3!!

  • I wonder if sword fighting classes are mandatory for joining Valve.
  • Hmmmmmmmm...

  • "Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, makes a random appearance in a Kickstarter video for a sword fighting game."

Not sure how "random" I would call it, as the two are friends and Gabe is obviously a fan of Mr. Stephenson's work.

  • I know this is predominantly a video-game site, but come on guys - the main celebrity here is *not* Gabe Newell, but Neal 'Freaking' Stephenson!!! ;)
  • I really  want this game now!

  • Owning a forge!  Oh, the great things you can do when you're rich!

    JHaha I love Gabe.

  • Saw the kickstarter already and it looks incredible.  I'm really glad Newell has shown support for the project.

  • is it just me or does neil stephenson dress like a boss?
