Twisted Metal Creator Jaffe Working On Free-To-Play Shooter

Having just departed from Eat Sleep Play -- the studio he helped found -- after balancing and bug-fixing the company's recent Twisted Metal, Dave Jaffe is already hard at work on a new project.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Jaffe said his new game is a "free-to-play, browser-based, third-person shooter."

He went on to express his enthusiasm for the new free-to-play movement in the industry, saying, "I love the instant-on, I love the low to no barrier of entry to get all kinds of people to jump in and play, I love the fact that you're sitting there at lunch and can play for five minutes or you can get sucked in and play for three hours. You don't have to sit there and power up your f------ machine and go through legal screens and load screens and load the game. I know that sounds kind of petty but when you think of all the distractions and fragmentation of entertainment today, for me that's kind of a pain. I'll choose to do other things rather than sit down and load up a triple-A game unless it's super, super special."

However, he does have reservations about how some companies are currently using the model. "While I love parts of free-to-play, I hate other parts," commented Jaffe. "I hate how it's like the tail wagging the dog and it's the business model and all about getting people to pay [with more micro-transactions]. You can listen to developers all day long tell you it's not pay to win, but you know, it kind of is pay to win. I'm not saying they're evil or they're lying - but one of the things they like to say is pay with your time or pay with your money. Well both of those are really s-----."

We'll be curious to see what the man behind the Twisted Metal and God of War franchises has in store for us. Stay tuned to Game Informer for more of Jaffe's upcoming project. Be sure to check out the full interview on GamesIndustry.biz.

  • Alright, here's the big question, new Twisted Metal, how was it?

The reason I ask is that 2 seemed to be the high point of the series (which is a shame considering how much more awesome it should have been over time, but three was such a disappointment and Black was just "eh").
  • I'll keep an eye on it. F2P shooters generally are a good way to waste some time.
  • Thoos eare fun

  • It seems like everything is becoming F2P.. And frankly, they're quite good. But Jaffe has a lot of competition, what with Warface, Planetside 2, Firefall, and Tribes.

  • I think Jaffe is really cool, so this is something I'll be following. F2P shooters are pretty fun.

  • I'm really hoping whatever he makes is multiplatform... Too many F2P shooters on the PC leave us console users feeling left out.
  • Just make this game so you can quit, start or join another studio to make another game, then quit, then...
  • I think Jaffe is losing his mind.
  • Jaffe gave me God of War. I'm happy for that. Beyond that, I think he's kind of a *** so I don't care what happens to him or what he does.

  • I'm excited for it.

  • I'm all for free games...bring it on Jaffe!

  • Free to play shooters isn't something I'm usually into. The fact that David Jaffe is part of it convinces me to give it a try.

  • There is something to be said about Free to Play, but whenever I play a free to play besides LoL, I feel that it is underdeveloped. Maybe I am coming into it with the wrong mindset but that's what I think.

  • My cousin and I loved Twisted Metal 2, and we both swear that after he lost the disc and we bought it again, it had been remade by 989 studios and totally messed up.
As much as we liked the franchise to that exact point, we both felt as though Twisted Metal Black was a ridiculously hard mess with good graphics but terrible gameplay.
Take all that in, and it's exactly how I felt about the demo for the new Twisted Metal. I couldn't even take out the weakest enemies because they were constantly shooting me from behind.
Needless to say, I longed for the days of taking Axle to a window outside of a hidden locker room and shooting homing rockets at unsuspecting enemies.

Edit: This was supposed to be in response to the first poster, but I guess I messed up royally.
  • No one cares, because this guy is a total tool and always abandons projects and companies.
  • Best of luck to him

  • This is particularly lame. I've heard Jaffe say this kind of thing before, and it struck me as odd. He's moving to browser-based games so I don't have to use a PS3/Xbox and sit through random companies' logo screens?

Get real. Jaffe was always good at telling me the real part of it. I just feel like I'm getting a half-assed response so he can cover his if this game fails.
