Microsoft Expanding Its $99 Xbox 360 Program

Last month, Microsoft announced that it would allow gamers to buy an Xbox 360 for the low, low price of $99. That may sound like a good deal, but Microsoft also requires those people to sign a two-year contract for Xbox Live Gold (at $15 per month). The questionable bargain was previously only available at Microsoft stores, but the publisher is now bringing the program to more retailers.

According to Microsoft's Larry Hyrb (aka Major Nelson), GameStop and Best Buy are the two stores newly approved to offer the subscription plan, starting soon. Hyrb warns, however, that gamers should not expect this pilot program to set the standard for future console pricing. In other words, you should probably save more than $100 if you want to buy the Xbox 360's successor.

  • I mean it seems good but you in the end paying more for a smaller drived xbox :/.
  • This seems bad. I will most definitely not be the first to sign my soul away.

EDIT: If Sony did it I might consider but . . .
  • I love my Xbox and everything but I'd always rather pay everything up front instead of paying this much. It's basically like renting a Xbox. Not worth it at all.

  • Dear god. This is probably the FOURTH worst idea ever. Ever.
  • In the end the consumer loses. No one should accept this.

  • Do they include an offical Xbox mirror, so you can watch your self getting it from behind for the next 2 years?
  • That is pay for a XBOX and 1/2, to much money! and looooww Gb! Better, go pre owned @ game stop!!

  • Great move for microsoft, with all their new announcements people will atomatoucly be drawn to this

  • If you were going to buy the subscription and a console anyway it makes perfect sense. It saves money. The only reason it might not be a good idea for people planning on getting a console and subscribing to Live Gold is that there may be a new console option before their subscription plan expires. I don't understand why people would be upset about this. Buying a full price console and subscribing to Live Gold is a waste of money. It's a bundle and like any other it's not for everyone but provides a significant savings for the people it is marketed towards.

Anything that allows more people to play that previously were unable is a good thing for the industry and for the players. I support this 100% and I think anyone who takes a better look at it before mindlessly agreeing with the tone of other comments would as well.
  • Mod
    Uh-oh.
  • The way Microsoft currently has this plan set up is terrible. If they, or and other console manufacturer do decided to adopt a similar pricing structure with their next console release, they better offer a lot more than what essentially boils down to a rip off. You are basically paying $460 for a 360 with no HDD and 24 months of live, where as if you just pick one up regularly, you can get a 360 with a 250GB HDD and 26 months of Live Gold for $420 or less. Do yourself a favor and save yourself at least $40 and the pain in the arse of not having a HDD.
  • It's till a horrible deal...

    No FO4 at E3...

Someone press the no button, QUICK.

  • feel bad for silvershine, now she has to rip off little old ladies at the gamestop.
  • This could work since Microsoft is integrating so many entertainment services into their subscription. If they can price the xbox 720 as a reasonable price and tack on the gold subscription at say 9.99 a month it wouldn't be a bad deal.

  • so this means that it is doing extremely well or horrible.....I wonder which one?

  • You guys need to stop whining about this.  This could be a permanent option in the future of gaming, and one that could benefit the industry as it appeals to a certain kind of consumer.  If you don't want to pay for it, then don't pay for it.  But shut up about it, already.

The whining from users on this site is getting old.

  • Don't read the comments then. If something is worth complaining about I would assume the industry would like to know. Don't you think genius? Read the article again. Especially the last sentence. You probably didn't do too well in reading and comprehension huh? And change your name to hazard to intelligence. Tool.

  • worse...deal..ever....

  • This is a really bad "deal".

  • At least we won't have this forced on us anytime soon... hopefully.
