SmartGlass Tethers Your Smart Device To Your 360

by Tim Turi on Jun 04, 2012 at 07:42 AM

Today at the company’s E3 2012 press conference, Microsoft’s Mark Whitney took to the stage to show off the brand new Xbox SmartGlass technology. The new tech allows users to use smart devices to control their 360s, interact with their games, and bring their media on the go.

SmartGlass works with any smart devices, including Windows phones, iOS devices, and Android devices. The onstage presentation demonstrated how 360 owners can start watching a movie on their tablet, then send it over to their 360 with the touch of the smart device. The tablet then automatically offers information on the cast and the show. Also in the demonstration, Whitney used his tablet to bring up a map of Game of Thrones’ Westeros and track characters’ travels. SmartGlass will also allow 360 users to use their smart devices as a remote to browse the dashboard.

Xbox SmartGlass also has game applications. The presentation showed how gamers will be able to edit plays in Madden using a tablet’s touchscreen capabilities. One video showed gameplay of Halo 4 going uninterrupted as a player browsed game invites and joined a multiplayer match, automatically saving his campaign progress and shooting him into an online match.

SmartGlass goes live in the fall of this year.
