The lights are on
Today, Valve announced that its much-anticipated Dota 2 will be free-to-play, and garner revenue through microtransactions in an in-game store.
The move was revealed on the official Dota 2 blog. The post went to lengths to disabuse gamers of the notion that they will be nickel-and-dimed to death in order to succeed in the game, as is the case with some free-to-play games, saying, "Dota 2 will not be a pay-to-win game. All the items in the store are cosmetic, and don’t affect gameplay…. All of the heroes will be available free of charge. We believe restricting player access to heroes could be destructive to game design, so it’s something we plan to avoid."
There is also a new FAQ on the Dota 2 site that answers a number of other questions you might have about the game going free-to-play.

Best news all day, am I right everyone?
I don't think there is a single developer out there who cares about its products and customers like Valve does. After this news, and reading their new employee handbook that leaked a couple weeks ago, I really feel that Valve is truly in a class of its own.
I don't mean to sound mean or anything like that, but wasn't it announced as a f2p game? I applied for Beta knowing it was gonna be f2p. I may be wrong and just heard a rumor of it's f2p'ness.
Mind blown. I won't be thinking straight all weekend. What is going on?
I dont know if this was their reason for making it F2P, but...
This is a very interesting way to make this a no piracy game. Why would u pirate a game thats free in the first place? I wonder if they were thinking about that when they made this choice.
I'll give it a try.
I may be a frequent League of Legends player, but I'm willing to give this a shot.
Valve freaking rocks. Now release Half Life 3
Now where are the people that whined about not getting the banner in Diablo 3 because they weren't in the beta? It's just a matter of time before they start complaining because they can't afford some of these things that make NO DIFFERENCE to the actual game play.
and all was right in the world
Dota was announced to be free to play months ago, IIRC...
Like it!!! Smart move from Valve! With LoL being Free-to-play this is the way to go if you want to get a piece of that cake :P
Meanwhile, Gabe Newell trolls us with pics featuring the HL3 sign.
