Monkey Paw To Bring Tomba To PSN

MonkeyPaw Games, which specializes in releasing classic games on digital platforms like PSN and XBLA, intends to port Sony's classic Tomba! to PlayStation Network.

In an interview with Joystiq, MonkeyPaw CEO John Greiner revealed that the company had purchased the rights to bring the game to the PSN Classics series from Sony and original developer Whoopee Camp. Sony originally published the game on the original PlayStation, and Whoopee Camp (founded by Ghosts 'n Goblins creator Tokuro Fujiwara) developed the game.

Greiner said the company would also consider bringing the game's sequel, Tomba! 2, to PSN, but all parties would wait to see how well Tomba! sells before making that decision.

Here's an anecdote for you: When I first started at Game Informer, myself and former editor Jay Fitzloff (who now works on Darksiders II at Vigil Games) had to do a last-minute Tomba! 2 strategy guide to fill the issue we were working on. We ended up working for 36 hour straight with no sleep. We drank a lot of Mountain Dew.

  • sorry Mario but Tomba remains one of my favorite platformers ever made

  • Haven't played this sense it first came out. IT would be nice to revisit it. I remember having fun with it.

  • LOVE THIS GAME!

  • Wait, is this coming to PSN as a PS1 Classic? Or is it a port that will only be playable on the PS3? I ask, because I only have a PSP, not a PS3, and it's not very clear to me in the article. So if this is only playable on the PS3, well... I'd be disappointed. I've been curious about this game ever since Reiner brought it up during the Super Replay Showdown.
  • Tomba 2 was better, most people know that, they should just release it along with Tomba.
  • Ahh very fun game, wished Reiner won the super replay tournament so we could have watched that. Here is hoping for just a replay on it soon.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot about Tomba!. Man, I had a blast with that game.

  • I wish we could have seen this on a replay

  • TOMBA!!!!!!!

  • well this helps his chances of getting in Playstation All-Stars....a lot.
  • Cool, cool.

I only played the Tomba! demo at a BestBuy and always wanted to try the whole game.

  • Ive been asking for this on the playstation forum along time ago.

  • Yes!  I had this game a long time ago but sold it.  Since copies on eBay were $50+ I've had to resort to emulating it on my Wii.  Now I can actually buy it.

  • Glad. This game is expensive otherwise.

  • It's about time Tomba! came to the PSN. Talk about a PSOne Classic. Both of these games, and Klonoa, are fantastic sidescrollers that hardly anyone played because everyone wanted chunky 3D games at the time. They would really benefit from a digital rerelease. It's weird that Sony gave up the rights to it to Monkeypaw though - they brought out Jumping Flash on the PSN, but Tomba! is too obscure? I wonder if they will bring the Ape Escape games to the PSOne/PS2 Classics line eventually too, or if they're "abandoning" them as well?
  • I'd buy it, day one. I have such fond memories of Tomba! I'm still a bit bummed Reiner didn't win the Super Replay Showdown, but Dan always does such a great job making Replays entertaining.

  • omg i wanna flip some freaking pigs.

  • There is so much awesome in this story!

  • This was one of my first games on the PS1. I absolutely love it!!! Who doesnt love causing some mayhem to a bunch of stupid pigs?

  • OMG Brilliant news! 2 Questions: Will it be available in the UK, and will the sequel be released?
