EA Closing Dragon Age Legends

BioWare's Facebook game Dragon Age Legends will be shut down next month, Electronic Arts said today. The publisher noted the move will allow it to provide resources to new projects in the social games space.

"EA and BioWare Social will be retiring Dragon Age Legends on June 18, 2012.," a spokesperson told Game Informer. "Closing out older titles is a tough decision, but allows us to dedicate resources in the BioWare San Francisco and Sacramento studios on exciting new social RPG projects already in development.

"We will share more about these projects soon."

Dragon Age Legends first launched in February 2011. It's available to play on Facebook and Google+

Comments
  • Never knew this existed
  • Probably cause hardly anyone knew about it or cared to play it

  • Perhaps they're moving people to Bioware in order to add more stupid social features to their games that nobody will ever use *facepalm*

  • I saw a message about them closing down when I loaded up this morning. I'm a little sad to see it go. It was kind of fun to be able to recruit characters from the games and utilize them. It had a sort of dumbed down Azure Dreams aspect of utilizing loot to expand and improve your home area. Not a bad game although you would have to spend money eventually to get some of the better stuff.

It was a good time killer on Facebook.

  • YEAH EA GIVE US REAL GAMES NOT THIS MOBILE CRAP!!!1111!!!one!!!eleven!!! right?
  • Is 16 months expected out of social games?  I can honestly say I haven't played it - but it looked like decent enough quality to have a longer than 16 month lifecycle.

  • This game was better than Dragon Age II

  • This is a telling sign for EA (and others) overall strategy and mentality towards the social games space; moving "hardcore" AAA franchises like Dragon Age to Facebook allows them to engage in web2.0 viral marketing, but it also encourages gamers who are apprehensive of Facebook games to try them out, maybe get an experience that's a little more in-line with what they want. The fact that they're already closing down Dragon Age Legends really goes to show the people that make the decisions at EA don't consider it a stand-alone title in the Dragon Age universe, like it's been touted as; rather, it was an elaborate piece of marketing for Dragon Age 2 (we can wonder if DA2's less-than-expected reception is at play in DAL's demise). DA2 released on March 8, 2011. DAL released in beta on March 18, 2011 (the beta was taken off and the game was officially released January 26, 2012. The game is considered a tie-in property to DA2, making it seem more integral to the overall DA2 experience. The fact that the game is closing on June 18, 2012, means this social game was technically only in full release for *4 and a half months*. I think it's safe to say that with this stance, EA doesn't want to bring AAA IPs into the social space, so much as they want to use the social space to *advertise* AAA games.

EDIT: It should also be noted that DAL used the standard social games in-game purchases model, meaning that it is not unrealistic to think that people shelled out cash for a "free" game that is now being shut down a little only four months after it was officially a full release. While I am a strong supporter of social networking, new payment models, etc. this is a shining example of how we need to always approach new technologies with a strong code of ethics.
  • It was pretty lame, although it didn't seem like it at first.  There was a castle building portion and an RPG battle portion, and for about 15 minutes they were fun.  But on the whole it was unbalanced, poorly tied in to Dragon Age II (including some weak items), and suffered serious slowdown.

And of course, it was an annoying Facebook game that only let you play it every 5 minutes, unless you wanted to pump cash into EA's pockets.

  • It really is just blunder after blunder with BioWare these days.

  • I thought this game was pretty fun. I've never liked turn based games, but this one was actually fun. I've only played DAO, by rental from Gamefly (never beat it because Skyrim came out) so this was my only way to play DA.

  • Translation: No one played the game.

  • That game sucked. Just stop with the social game obsession. Stop trying to shoehorn gamers in with brand names.
  • Now everyone freak the hell out so they can back track and claim that quote was given in error.

  • Nothing surprising here, I tried it out once just because of the Dragon Age name, and never touched it again.
  • glad people finally decided to vote with their clicks/wallets. don't allow this social "freeware" JUNK to clog up our gaming catalogs.

there are so many great indie devs out there making MUCH more meaningful and truly engaging games than this marketing-driven garbage, give your money to them and amazing things can happen (Fez, Braid, Journey, Bastion, the list goes on..)

  • FB Games = 15 minute doses followed by incessantly spamming your friends ... how is this ever fun?!

  • I didn't know this was even around and if I did I probably wouldn't have played it.Not too big on social web games.
