Nintendo's Redesigned Wii U Controller May Have Control Sticks

Patent applications from Nintendo for a redesigned Wii U controller surfaced earlier this year, and now a picture of the actual controller has appeared online. The image was posted on a Twitter feed of a QA tester at TT Games, but has since been removed.

The biggest change from the old controller (pictured below) to the new controller are the control sticks instead of circle-pads. It also looks like there may be a few new buttons and logos here and there.

This does not necessarily represent the final design of the Wii U controller. We will likely find out more about whether or not the controller has received an update next month at E3.

  • I heard that it may not be called the WiiU anymore. Wonder what it will be called if what I heard is true.
  • It's still too large, area-wise. That thing makes the old Xbox controller look like a short, barrel-chested dwarf standing next to Wilt the Stilt...
  • Doesn't really look any different. The only this this proves is that Nintendo is still calling it the WiiU

    This pleases me.
  • Hmmm... Never seen that kind of a controller before. I'm sure this will be known at E3.
  • I think it could work but,not for hours of play...hands are gonna cramp like crazy after awhile & then your left with another casual gamer toy for the grandparents in the nursing home.
  • Really hope that they change the name for this system. . . otherwise, like the control stick idea. Harkens back to the game controllers of old. . .
  • Please have L3/R3 buttons. The gamecube didn't have them, and fewer third party games came to the system.

EDIT: Yes, I meant the joystick clickys.
I think skyrim should come to the wii u, because more power (which the system will very likely have) could make it so it could output at 1080p at a similar or greater framerate to the 360/ps3 , and a touchscreen that could could be used for an inventory screen, or maybe having a quicksave function.
If the controller didn't have the joystick clickys, it could make a port impossible.

Also looks like they've been moved to the side a bit and the start/select buttons were moved too. Everyone that got their hands on it last year said it was very comfortable to hold too and I hope it feels the same now. Can't wait to see what Nintendo does at E3.
  • The right analog stick is still looks a bit off with it being above the "ABXY" buttons.
  • Sounds good but change the name.

  • who cares, it's still a joke controller for a drowning system. people by Nintendo systems ONLY to be able to play Zelda, Mario, and Kid Icarus....they captured a generation of gamers and their place in history will forever be cemented as that...but for all the die hards that are gonna come for my head just PLEASE read a newspaper and look at Nintendo's profit (or lack there of) for 2011...they LOST half a BILLION dollars...there's a reason for that.. #readabookzeldafans
  • Ughh... the buttons are still below the sticks. Seriously Nintendo? It's been the other way around for years. It's going to be a jarring enough transition holding a huge rectangle in my hands WITHOUT the added confusion of reversing the button layout.
  • Going with the flow could be a lot more profitable than the "Innovations" Nintendo comes up with...
  • I wonder how ergonomic analog sticks, that protrude would be on such a wide controller.
  • What are the two new buttons for? Honestly, it's not as clunky as some people say. The N64 controller looked clunky but I could play it just fine. I think a new controller inspires more innovation from triple A games. I don't see why everyone loves the 360 and PS3 controller, the Wiimote is equally good.
  • Personally, I like the look of the old one better. It looks like the new one has a charging cord, which would be much more convenient than changing the batteries every now and then.
  • I am all up for new things when it comes to the WII-U. can we have screen shoots of game play, from games that are not already on other consoles? I would like to see more on the console as a whole. I know that the controller is the sailing point, but where is the other end of this? What does it look like? can we please have more on that?
