38 Studios Skips Payroll, Can't Pay State

Update: The check 38 Studios hand delivered to the state bounced this afternoon. According to WPRI, the EDC will still accept the overdue $1.125 million payment if 38 Studios can find a way to come up with the money.

----------------------------------

The situation at 38 Studios is getting worse. The studio is reportedly paying the overdue $1.25 million it owes the R.I. Economic Development Corporation, but did not make payroll this week.

Judy Chong, a spokesperson for the EDC, confirmed the news to WPRI today. 38 Studios employed 379 full-time employees as of March 15, including 288 in Rhode Island, the report says.

Owner Curt Schilling met with state officials earlier this week to seek additional help. No decision was made. The parties will meet again on Monday.

  • Well if you any of you enjoyed KoA: Reckoning....I wouldn't expect a sequel...feel bad for those that didn't get paid. I don't see this ending well for anyone working there.
  • In the end, I hope all goes well for them. 38 Studios is a great company.

  • Dx WHERE MY MONEY?!

  • This is such a shame. I really wish they somehow get a shot at a sequel for Amalur.
  • There is a deposit of valuable rocks down by the shore. Please retrieve them and bring them to me...alive.
  • Talk about crap hitting the fan. I wouldn't be surprised if we get more bad news in the following days. Sad to see new IPs/games possibly ruined before they can even really start. Hope the same doesn't happen to Dragon's Dogma.
  • A brand new studio puts out a game that gets universal praise and now they're in such financial trouble they may not get around to continuing their work. That just sucks.
  • i dont understand this...their game sold well, what is happening? maybe it is poor management. i hope someone buys the amalur license if they sink...
  • Not good at all...

  • At least we still have BIG HUGE GAMES.
  • Sucks for all those that didn't get payed.Hope this is resolved quickly for their employees sake.

  • This is an awful situation. Reflects poorly on the state of Rhode Island for not evaluating risk properly, poorly on 38 Studios management for burning so much money, and poorly on the industry as video game investments can be perceived as even more of a risk by states and/or investors.

  • 379 employees is way to many unless they have several other projects being worked on. New studios should start with 5 - 10 and grow from there. And when they have money to grow, only grow to the point where you still have enough money to make 2 or 3 games, without firing anyone, incase 1 of the 3 doesnt sell as well.

Edit: Is 38 Studios new or have they been relativley quiet until Amalur?
  • Jeez laweez 38 is a FAR bigger studio than I thought they were. Owing 75 million is astronomical too. Why wouldn't they just be a medium sized developer and use outsourcing, like Naughty Dog or something? That seems like a really, really unwise decision by Curt Schilling or whoever to try to startup a company that large and that expensive to maintain. And yet, I still won't buy Reckoning. Game came out months ago; why is it still over $50? EA, wake the heck up and knock the price down! Maybe it would sell better if you did your "publisher's duty" and brought it down to $40 two months after release. The game should be $30 NEW on Amazon right now. $52 is absurd for a game that came out in February. Especially since Reckoning as DLC. If I wanna pump more money into it, I'll do it through DLC. Good luck 38 Studios.
  • Try making less shittier games and maybe next time this won't happen.

  • Schilling's contradictory statements about corporate bailouts and then going to the state to ask for well, a BAILOUT, is frustrating and points to poor management and decision making on his, the owners, part. The state of RI pushed hard for the funding to get the studios to HQ their so they could get the jobs, and now they're paying dearly for it. Sad thing is, I bet they get some help and still close within 12 months.
  • No no noo D: I've relly been enjoying Kindoms of Amalur, I hope 38 Studios will be fine, so we can get an improved sequal! If not, hope the world and story can go on at the hands of another studio >_<
  • Sounds like poor management!!!!!  But what is sad is they will get the bailout due to Curt Shilling being Curt Schilling. Being a MA native, the Red Sox players (good or bad, retired or not)are treated like Gods.  But with RI's checked political past...they better be real careful messing this up!!!!

  • Geez lose some of your employees and stop paying your testers; interns will do that for free!
