The lights are on
Fans have been waiting forever it seems to see the latest on Sony's long-developed first-party game The Last Guardian.
It was reported last December that creator Fumito Ueda left the studio and was finishing the game on a contract basis. When we talked to head of Sony's worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida in mid-February, he said of the game, "It’s making progress. There have been technical issues and the engineering team is reworking it. It’s playable, but not to the level of when we can say it’s coming."
This brings us to today. I asked Sony PR if there were any plans to show the game off at E3 next month. "The Last Guardian continues to be developed, however we have no news to share at this time with regard to the franchise and E3," a spokesperson told me.
Now, before you freak out, Sony isn't saying whether or not the game will be at E3. We'll to find out in a few weeks if the game is part of the company's press conference or not.
The Last Guardian is clearly in development hell and Sony isn't likely to show off the game again until things are stabilized and back on track. If they can't show it at E3, then SCEA president Jack Tretton needs to take the stage and at least reassure fans that Sony is still backing the project heavily.
What are your overall thoughts on The Last Guardian? Do you still care about this game? Should Sony move it to next-gen at this point or cut its losses and put out whatever the got?
I have worries that it has been in development for too long. Its very rare for a game to still feel relevant and powerful after nearly a whole generation in production, as this industry is constantly changing a develpoer's initial vision can easily be destroyed by a bloated development time. As new games come and influence the industry in different ways, it makes this 5-7 year endeavour striving to innovate for a market that has long passed. I experienced this with L.A. Noire, and Sony better hope that whatever mysterious shape this game is supposed to take is striking enough to still be pertinent today.
I really want this game...
i purchase my ps3 for that game....and .. now for sure the last new will be the game is cancelled...for sure..stupid sony....hope this dosent happend
The life of a video game fan....get excited, wait, repeat. That image at the top of the article looks interesting as hell btw
Cut the damn losses and get this game out. Releasing it for the next gen now would only hurt the game's polish. This is an announced follow up to possibly the 2 games that are most widely accepted as art. This needs to be in people's hands.
Normally games that get delayed to hell and back don't bug me, even if I was looking forward to it, but this is a Team ICO game, ICO and SotC are two of my all time favorite games, to not want the third one would be wrong.
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to hate on this game but to me it seems to be receiving a lot of undue attention for no reason other than people's rose-tinted glasses for two games from years ago.
They must finish this game just to keep the legacy alive of ico and shadow I remember playing shadow that the graphics where on par with games on the ps3 and was wowed. Also jim you had a typo at the end whatever they got. Simone needs to lay off the coffee lol.
If they cancel this game, my PS3 is going to be collecting a LOT of dust. So far it has been already thanks to the Mass Effect binge I've been going through, and my God Of War Collections (HD & Origins HD) have been keeping the playstation alive for a short amount of time. But Last Guardian is the one I've been waiting years for! Come on already!
I really hope The Last Guardian gets released one of these days. I wonder though, will Final Fantasy Versus 13 or The Last Guardian release first? I'm placing my bet on Final Fantasy Versus 13.
I'm expecting bad news from this. TLG is the only remaining title I have to play on PS3. But given Sony is on a bad news spree, I'm starting to give up on this one.
Valve, why don't you even talk about HL3?
Heard of the games this developer makes and it interests me, but I need to plan when I will get those games then make my assumptions about this one. Still looks like a good game, though.
I love Team ICO games, and I really want to play this game. I love trying to piece together the connection betweens ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, and the use of subtle elements to convey emotion and story is something I miss in games where every plot element is explained to the point of become tedious to listen to.
While i was fanatical about keeping up with this game the first few years, i am starting to lose interest.
Team ICO is dead, they should just cancel this game and dissolve the rest of the team, with Ueda's departure the team won't have the direction to ever make another game like this, so we might as well just stop pretending...
Well my excitement IS begining to slowly abate....
