The lights are on
Square Enix said tonight it is delaying the release of Tomb Raider until the first quarter of 2013. The game was previously set for release this fall.
Darrell Gallagher, studio head at developer Crystal Dynamics, posted a messaged on the game's official blog explaining the delay and noted Tomb Raider will be shown at E3 next month. Below is his message in full:
When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers.
The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.
We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.
The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.
Darrell Gallagher
As an apology for the delay, Crystal Dynamics posted the above screenshot, which apparently hints at what we can expect to see from the game at E3.

Not surprised. It is a reboot, and as such, is a huge undertaking. They shouldn't have even announced it until this year's E3.
dam that sucks. lookin forward to this for sure. max payne too!
This seems to be becoming quite the trend.
I always say, If its going to make the game better, then by all means, wait till its perfect.
I'm all for delays if they do indeed improve the overall quality of the game. I'm so tired of having games rushed and then having to deal with stupid bugs that should have been fixed. Skyrim is a perfect example of that.
I was wondering why we weren't hearing about Raider. I guess this answers that question.
take your time.
NOOO! Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite were my two most anticipated games this year! Figures this would happen but if it's for the good of the game then I suppose it's alright. Guess I'll have to set my sights on Hitman: Absolution and Dishonored for now.
kinda grateful. $60 to spend on another game.
Glad to see some devs are still thinking about the quality of a game and not afraid to delay it. Seems a lot of developers and publishers are way to eager to rush games out the door to meet their bottom line faster these days.
Good more games should take there time to polish there games
They can take all the time they want. So long as it's for a good cause.
Yeah man, if you want us to get the best game possible that's the right choice, take your time
I was pissed off when I first saw this story. I eally wanna get this game, but if this means it could be a better game if they spend more time on it, then I'll do my best to wait a little longer.
I'm willing to wait for this game.
