The lights are on
Square Enix said tonight it is delaying the release of Tomb Raider until the first quarter of 2013. The game was previously set for release this fall.
Darrell Gallagher, studio head at developer Crystal Dynamics, posted a messaged on the game's official blog explaining the delay and noted Tomb Raider will be shown at E3 next month. Below is his message in full:
When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers.
The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.
We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.
The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.

As an apology for the delay, Crystal Dynamics posted the above screenshot, which apparently hints at what we can expect to see from the game at E3.

I am still looking forward to this game - I just have to wait a bit longer. Hopefully they get it right!

I guess it's good to know companies are willing to delay a game to work on it more instead of releasing a buggy mess. Still, I was really looking forward to playing this this fall.

So if bioshock infinite and Tomb Raider get delayed to early 2013, and GTA V end up announcing a release date then as well, which one gets delayed out of those months into next summer?

Whew!!!!! That will help my budget. This one looks fantastic!!!! Can’t wait to check it out at E3.
i just had a feeling it was too good to be true for this awesome reboot to be complete and finished by the fall.. sadness fills my heart but atleast i have time to reset the countdown clock.
Thanks for the heads up GI.. now i can go back and play thru tomb raider for my trophies as i wait for the official return of Lara.

good reason for a delay
Oh please. They're just staying clear of the massive game this fall. Who can blame them. Call of duty and halo 4 in november... The competition's tough.
What the hell! This was like my top 5 that I was looking forward to this fall! Well, at the very least I'll be occupied anyway by the other games I'm getting during fall.
I'm really not surprised by this, but it still sucks :/
It looked way too simplified anyway...
since no official release date was ever announced I am ok with the delay. it felt like a far reach for it to come out this year anyway. For Lara Croft to make her return triumphant she's going to need great timing!
