Reader Discussion: It’s Mother’s Day

That’s right, it’s Mother’s Day, every gamer’s favorite holiday. What I want to know is, are there any gamer mothers out there?

My mother does not play games. She tried Rock Band once, and I think I got a Wii Remote in her hand for a brief moment of bowling, but for the most part she is completely oblivious to the medium. One of my grandmothers, on the other hand, really enjoys video games. She actually has a lot to do with the gamer I am today. She bought me my first Game Boy and a copy of Dr. Mario because she noticed how much I liked playing with hers whenever I would visit. The other mother in my life, my baby-mama (A.K.A. my wife), plays more video games than me somehow. At this very moment, she is spending her first Mother’s Day as an official participant napping with the baby having spent the last two full nights playing Minecraft on the Xbox 360.

What about you? Does your mother play games? Does she approve of your hobby?

  • ive seen my mother play the original mario bros. once. I swear shes an innovator because whenever shed jump a gap shed yank the controller in that direction in hopes it would make her jump farther...hilarious.

Nowadays thats a real way to play....

  • I got my mom into Angry Birds once she got a smartphone and then my wife got her into Words, Hanging, and Scramble with Friends as well as Draw Something.  She does have a Wii but hardly ever plays it, although she did say she was going to get Wii Fit or a similar game and use to start exercising.

She was initially opposed to buying me a game console but her long-time boyfriend/significant other convinced her to get me a SNES for Christmas when I was 5 and I haven't looked back since.

  • My mom grew up in the fifty's and sixty's, She knows very little about games and doesn't exactly appreciate how much I play them. Now that she has an iPad I've introduced to some puzzle games that she enjoys.

  • My mom's bought so many games and consoles for me over the years; it should be self-evident that she accepts and promotes my hobby despite never being that skilled at them. She's tried the Playstation Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune games and only barely handling their controls. Other than that and a Wii Trivial Pursuit game, she mostly just enjoys watching the rest of us play, but I'm fine with that in exchange for the allowance money. Way to go for moms!

  • Dang I Need To Get Me A Gamer Wife. That Would Be Sweet, Im Only 16 Though..... But Maybe One Day.
  • My mom like to play games. She's not completely hardcore at gaming,

I let her play Wii one time, I and was just wining against her. Either Just Dance, or something else maybe...

  • My mother does not play games, and she doesn't even approve of the hobby haha.

  • My mother is very anti-gamer. Extremely so.

  • After my son was born I held him in my arms while he slept or ate at times and played the video games. It was so relaxing to do something normal after becoming a mom.

  • I bought my mom a Wii last Christmas, but I'm pretty sure she only plays when I come over to visit, which has become less and less frequent since I started graduate school. My soon to be wife, on the other hand co-owns a Wii, PS3, and XBOX 360 with me, as well as having her own DS and PS Vita, and plays all sorts of games with me. She mostly prefers zombie games, but we played through Skylanders together and I just got her into Dungeon Defenders, which she really likes, but wait until she meets the Demon Lord. We have two bengals, who we refer to as our sons, so I guess that sort of makes her a gamer mom :)

  • My mother plays games that catch her fancy. It changes every year, but as of now, she plays House of the dead, bomberman and splatterhouse on a regular basis.

  • nope, she thinks i should be outside more, but the light, it burns
  • my mother is a master of tetris, bejeweled, and some other older puzzle games.  Putting a modern game in front of her, however, is futile.  Anything made in the last ten to twenty years just confuses her.

  • Mother of three and a Marine wife. I play sonic racing with the kids and Call of Duty with husband.
  • My mom loved Frogger back in the day. I've tried to have her play Black Ops but like so many nongamer moms, she cannot use both analog sticks lol. She says "No game can compare to Pong" xD

  • my mom introduced me to games, she was always playing mortal kombat

  • she likes crappy facebook games and no doesn't approve but its ok cause i don't approve of her smoking lol
  • my mom mostly plays games on facebook and bejewled 3 i guess she approves of my hobby

  • Well, most mothers don't games that much anyways. Tis probably because they're not used to playing games with a certain controller. I tried convincing my mom to play games for the past few months. But tries, just gets mad the shes not playing very well. I took me like a few min. to get used to every single game. Her longer than me. Just never know why she can't figure things out with help.Good times.
