EA Clarifies Disappearing Battlefield 3 Servers

A report from earlier this week suggested developer DICE was shutting down its own servers for Battlefield 3. EA says this isn't the case. The report says players were noticing official servers disappear to the point where DICE-managed servers are no longer visible on either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Below is the following response EA sent to Game Informer this afternoon:

DICE is not shutting down servers. If DICE-managed servers appear unavailable, it is because they have been rented and customized by players. DICE will continue to add servers and will reserve a percentage of servers for players who prefer to connect through DICE-hosted servers.

Custom Servers have always been extremely popular with Battlefield PC players. With Battlefield 3, we’ve introduced a Custom Servers program to console gamers. Response has been overwhelmingly positive. Custom Servers gives players the ability to tailor the settings and parameters of a given server, which directly affects gameplay. It also gives players more choice as they select which server and gameplay style they like best.

As with any new innovation, there may be some confusion among players who are experiencing Custom Servers for the first time.  We encourage players to use server filters and “favorite” options to find the servers that best suit their play style. We have enormous respect for the Battlefield community and are listening to the feedback.  It is our #1 priority to ensure all players are having the best possible play experience.

  • Why would people think DICE would shut there own servers down for their biggest shooter?
  • I personally dislike the custom servers, and they've somewhat killed my motivation to play BF3 for now. My friends and I use Quick Match to find our games, and there doesn't appear to be a way to filter out custom servers from these.

On more than one occasion, we have been booted from games, even though we're not doing anything lame like spawn camping. The admins just happen to be immature and decide they don't want decent players beating their team.

Dice, I love your games, but your menu friendliness is definitely sub-par. It took them way too long to add a "Quit" button after matches end. Having to wait for a new match to start THEN quit was about as big an oversight as I can fathom.

Anyways, not to bash Battlefield 3, still my favorite FPS out there right now. Just wish it was a little more user-friendly.

  • Well once they admit that Free-Temp servers are up for players to make. I'll jump back in the BF3 boat. As those are what the One Day Rent servers should be and not charge you money to do so.......oh well...I like BF over CoD anyway. So I can't hate DICE for EA's actions.
  • I like custom servers, but I also think that it should should be easier finding a server that gives you a vanilla BF3 experience. A filter that separates rented serves from official Dice/EA ones would be all it takes, really. Sometimes you just wan´t to play a normal game of Conquest, not one with 9500000000000 tickets.
  • I hate when your owning the other team and they just banned you for being good......ill stick to DICE servers

  • Well, okay then. I'll just continue to play Battlefield BC 2. The better game, IMO.
  • So they are "shutting down" the servers, they just used clever wording... Renting them out is basically the same thing, since they're no longer under DICE settings and control.

EA needs to stop all the sly wording... The truth will come out, just like it did with SWTOR losing subscription numbers.
  • this is why call of duty it 10x better
  • I like the new servers but I think DICE should have kept their "We will never charge for DLC" promise.

  • I have found the new servers to be amazing. I like having someone else set up the rules a little better. Also the battles seem longer and more intense because everyone is fighting for points. I haven't noticed any problem with them so maybe I just get on at the right time in the evening.
  • And how many servers are they actually reserving? I love the server renting idea, but ever since they started it I haven't found a single standard DICE server and its really annoying.
  • I hear allot of crying. Go play COD.
  • my only question is when players play on their custom servers.....do they level up the same as those who do not? that wouldnt seem very fair.....however never played BF3 so you might not even level up idk
  • I definitely think this is going on. I just finished playing about 3 hours of BF3 and I can tell you without question I didn't find a single DICE server. What I really can't stand is that the vast majority of the servers have bent the rules in some way. 200% tickets and sometimes 500% tickets makes it almost impossible for the defense to win. They ban weapons they personally find unfair. They boot people for no god damn reason other than you are destroying their little group. DICE has been making these games for a decade, finding that perfect balance and now every server I join has manipulated that balance in some stupid way. I really hate what they've done to my favorite multiplayer.
  • Hmmmm. I wonder if Activision will end up using this model as a means to bring dedicated servers back to Call of Duty. If people want them, make them pay for it.
  • Maybe these servers disappearances were what the Mayans were talking about. It IS the end of the world! (lol)
  • This reminds me, What's up with the PS3 GI community server? It's been on my favorites for weeks, but I've never seen anyone on...
  • You know you can just connect to an EA server. No difference in the 2. But hey keep complaining. Ill be playing and getting my double XP tonight while you do
