Sony Posts Record Loss For Last Fiscal Year

Sony posted a record loss for the last fiscal year ending on March 31, 2012, and that's partly due to lower hardware and TV sales.

Revenue for the company's Consumer Products and Services division, which houses both video games and TVs, was down 18.5 percent from the previous year, and the division posted a net loss of approximately $2.9 billion. Previously it posted over $135 million in profit. Overall, Sony's losses widened from the previous fiscal year to $5.7 billion.

Worldwide, Sony sold 13.9 million PS3 units for the fiscal year, which is down slightly from 14.3 million the previous year. At least software was up, however, with 156.6 million units sold worldwide, as compared to 147.9 million in fiscal year 2010. The company says that 1.8 million Vita units have been sold worldwide as of the end of March.

Sony expects profits of $376.5 million for the current fiscal year.
