Rumor: Xbox 360 To Get Internet Explorer

Sony's PS3 had an internet browser since day one, and a recent rumor suggests that Microsoft's Xbox 360 is finally getting one of its own.

The Verge, citing multiple sources, has a rumor that the system will get a fully functional Internet Explorer browser that can be controlled via Kinect voice and motion gestures (but Kinect will not be mandatory). The 360 currently only has a Bing search for media.

If this is true, E3 would be as good a time as any to announce this move.

In these days of tablets and smart phones, does anyone care about a browser on their system anymore?

  • I've actually used my browser on the PS3 a decent amount, but it's hard to not look at this with an awkward eye. Internet explorer? Ehhh....

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • then more the reason for it to b there already.

  • yesyesyesyesyesyesyYESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well it's about time.

  • I wouldn't mind having a web browser on the xbox, but it really isn't necessary.

  • Though Bing and Explorer are not exactly the most popular engines I welcome the chance to erase one more gloating point which my friends have to lord over me with their PS3s.  All thats left now is Blue-ray, and quite frankly I can buy one of those now for as low as 45 bucks separately, and besides I'm one of those people that is extra careful about my system and try to limit the amount of discs I have spinning in my system to avoid over heating.

  • I guess that could be cool, but I can't imagine it would be something I would use regularly, unless you could open it without leaving your game so you could look up a hint or walk through right  on the spot.

  • meh

  • now it just needs the video codecs from the year 1977, updated

  • So the thing came out in 2005 and it has taken them 7 years to include a browser?  Doesn't the Wii have a browser?!

  • Will it support flash?

  • Too little, too late. When the "Console wars" first started I was with xbox all the way being that i had the original one. My first turn off was Lives subscription fee, the second was that little by little i had to pay Microsoft for things that I can use for free on my PC, not to mention everyone else was using the same things for free on ps3. I finally bought me a ps3 about 4 months ago and haven't turned on my xbox since.

    THIS WON'T CHANGE THAT.

  • I suggest that Microsoft should give an option of what Browser we want on our Systems. But Since microsoft owns Xbox 360, we have to use IE. Ugh I rather have Firefox though.

  • Internet Explorer isn't so terrible that you would rather have no browser at all. Get over it. My bet is that they're just developing a browser for the 360 and want to slap the name Internet Explorer on it so that it has a name and Microsoft doesn't have to file for another copyright.

It's just like their Bing search. It doesn't have any of Bing's defining qualities. They just wanted to put a name to the face so that people had a name to refer to it by.

I'd really appreciate it if detractors would take a short moment to realize the IE360 would be nothing like its Windows/Mac counterparts.

  • I think this will be a great addition to the Xbox 360 but lets just home it doesn't have clunky controls and slow browsing

  • Sweet, a horrible interface, a horrible browser, and a horrible search engine.

  • *Reads this article, looks at the Xbox 360 carrying the IE Browser... & throws up & pukes*

Microsoft needs to change it's Browser Choice to Firefox, or Google Chrome. ;)

  • I got here by using chrome.
