The lights are on
According to U.S. retail tracker NPD, total video game sales in April 2012 fell 32 percent year-over-year from $930 million to $630 million.
Physical software sales dropped even harder, from $533.7 million to $307.2 million, a 42 percent decline. Microsoft's Xbox 360 led console sales for the month with 236,000 units sold. Sony and Nintendo have not released hardware numbers at this time.
“This year, Easter fell very early in April, which means most Easter-related purchases may have fallen into March this year, whereas last year, Easter fell late in April causing most sales to fall in that month," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "We usually find that Easter-related purchases generate an extra 10 percent in revenue in the month they occur, so some of the softness compared to last April could be attributed to the shift in Easter timing.”

“I think what the new physical retail content sales reflect a very light release schedule in terms of the amount of compelling new games," Frazier added. "Last April, the top seven titles outsold the top-selling title this year, and, simply stated, there were notably fewer new market introductions.
"I think it’s a simple as that because when we see compelling content come into the market, the games are still selling as well as ever – we’re just saw a lot less this April as compared to last.”
Prototype 2 is fun but it's not worth $64.64....
I wish the witcher 2 was higher on the list it is a great game.
Damn mobile games! DESTROY APPLE!
a good game, it is.
i gotta get PROTOTYPE 2!
WAY TOO MANY DAMN GAMES IN FALL! Most people who play games in general go to elementary school, high school, and college so why sell the games WHILE the kids are in school? Do it before and in summer so that we can play while there is no school to get in the way. How can they not see it like this?
I get a kick out of these stupid analysts who think they got *** figured out because of their stupid "Based on last years numbers" formula. Well the formula doesn't work! The top seven titles from last year outsold the top selling title this year because more people are unemployed this year than last year, it has nothing to do with the titles released.
Based on their analysis Mass Effect, Mario and Modern Warfare just aren't top of the line franchises any longer. This is the kind of stupidity that gets spewed when there are unhappy investors.
just wait untill this fall and next spring.
Oh darn. The video game industry "only" made over half a billion last MONTH. Poor them.
2011 did have better games
Bought Dead Island because there wasnt anything else worth getting I mean Star Wars kinect is 2nd?
Lets be realistic. If they wan't bigger sales they have to plan better with the release dates. Now lets say that Cod had kept MW3 until this month. What was coming out during it's release?
im surprised to see Mass Effect in 8th
Has anyone tried to get the Witcher 2 from gamefly? They are constantly low of copies. I keep checking it hoping I can get a chance to try it out.
I'm more shocked that Kinect Star Wars was 2nd, must have really been a slow month.
Saw that coming.
Star Wars Kinect beat out The Witcher 2, someone please explain how that is possible....
Wow. Kinect Star Wars is number 2? I bet there are a lot of disappointed gamers out there.
The reason nothing sold was because there was nothing released this month worth getting, and even if Prototype 2 was good the first one was so mediocre no one wanted to risk buying it...
there really wasn't anything of note that came out in April
