The lights are on
BioShock Infinite was surely going to be one of the buzzed-about games of E3, but unfortunately, not only will the game not be at the convention, but it's being delayed as well.
The game is being pushed out of 2012 and into 2013. February 26 to be exact. Furthermore, the title won't be shown at events like E3 or Gamescom in Germany.
The following message hit our inboxes this morning:
A MESSAGE FROM KEN LEVINE
When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing.
Since then, we’ve come to realize that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need, we’ve decided to move the game’s release to February 26, 2013. We wanted to let our loyal (and very patient!) fans know this as soon as possible.
I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter. We had a similar experience with the original BioShock, which was delayed several months as our original ship date drew near. Why? Because the Big Daddies weren’t the Big Daddies you’ve since come to know and love. Because Andrew Ryan’s golf club didn’t have exactly the right swing. Because Rapture needed one more coat of grimy Art Deco.
The same principle now applies to BioShock Infinite.
What does this mean for you? It means a bit more waiting, but more importantly, it means an even better BioShock Infinite. The great can be made greater, and we owe it to both ourselves and to you, our fans, to take this opportunity. Irrational Games is one of those rare developers lucky enough to ask the people who sign the checks: “Hey, can we have a few more of those checks?”
We are also going to hold off on showing BioShock Infinite at the big events of the summer, like E3 and Gamescom. That way, the next time you see our game, it will be essentially the product we intend to put in the box. Preparing for these events takes time away from development, time we’re going to use instead to get the best version of Infinite into your hands in February.
The previous October date just felt too good to be true.

This sucks but it gives me more time to catch up on other major releases from this year
Hey, if it means a better game in the end, I say take all the time you need. Besides, I'm sure we'll be plenty busy this coming holiday season as it is what with AC3 and RE6 being released within months of each other.
It'll be worth the extra wait.
I can wait. Still looking forward to it. Maybe it'll make the last year of this generation break the mold of prior ones and actually have some worthwhile blockbuster games.
I'm completely OK with this. Any developer who takes the extra time to make a game the best it can be is cool in my book. I'm sure it will be worth it and besides, this will give me the time to play all the other amazing games coming out this fall.
i dont mind for a big title been moved to a February release, the Xmas season is to heptic and some good titles do not sell as well as they should
While I'm definitely cool with Irrational taking the time they need to make the game better, I'm still pretty bummed out about this.
*Adopts whiny kid voice* "I just want t play it nowwwwwww."
Why must they torture me soooo?!!?!?
Take your time, Ken. Take your time.
Thank god. This is one of my top games and now it is coming in a non crowded time. I just want to get the best game they can give.
If another delay means higher quality, I'm willing to wait another two years. Take your time Irrational Games. I'm sure the final product will only be more spectacular now.
Oh please, Ken. We all know that your artistic integrity is just a ruse to put months in between the fall releases and your game!
I wish more developers were willing and able to do this.x
I'm dissapointed I'll have to wait to play this, but I would always rather have a game delayed instead of pushed out before it is ready. I'm sure it will be terrific whenever I can get my hands on it.
