Microsoft Patents Pressure-Sensitive Controller With Built-In Memory

Microsoft may have a controller in the works that can recognize the person holding it.

A recently discovered patent shows an Xbox 360 controller that can recognize a player, "using a hand-pressure signature." If it can remember who you are, then it may have some memory built into it. Microsoft similar interactivity with the Kinect, but personally, I have never been able to get it to recognize me, so I am skeptical about this new idea.

People often forget that the Wii remote has a little bit of storage capacity. The Wii remote won't recognize who you are just by touching it, but you can transport up to 10 Miis to another Wii console using the remote.

  • it would be pretty cool if you could sign in just by grabbing your remote

  • if it works then that's a pretty cool idea. It'd be handy for signing into live, especially if one console has 2 or 3 different users in the household.
  • Sounds cool but I feel as if such a device is going to cost me a arm and a leg...

  • Pretty sweet, Microsoft! I hope this is the launch controller for the new Xbox too.

  • EPIC FAILURE!

  • stupid idea another fail by xbox not surprice

  • Will it be as useless as the Kinect?  Will it cost as much?

  • ill wear gloves or play with sea-men stained hands. fixed
  • Interesting. I wonder why they plan to use this.

  • This seems like it would be more of a hassle than anything else. My friends and I share controllers/accounts all the time.

  • I just want some more buttons. Not a whole lot more, just a few.

  • I would only buy it if the whole controller is covered in an outragiously comfortable material and it has a feature that senses when you get pissed and will pause the game to play calming music. Give me that controller Microsoft, and I will denounce all other systems.
  • Sweet! I've just received my free minecraft giftcode!

  • What happens later on when my Xbox controller asks me why I don't touch it like I used to? I'm not that lazy where I am unable to just log myself in. No need to apply that "special touch" to my controller.
  • I think syncing controllers is already bad enough. there's no need for this

  • I dunno, could be fun.

  • hate hate hate hate hate everybody hate Microsoft ^^

  • Eh... I don't really see the point of this. Sure, if it worked, it could adjust multiple things based on who's playing. It could sign onto your account, change settings like difficulty, adjust brightness, etc, but nothing comes to mind that would really change the game. I suppose if you had 3 or more gamers using the controller, those alone would be a selling point. I almost never let people play my console, with my controller, by themselves. We always co-op, or they have their own system. It really wouldn't do anything for me.

  • Could be an interesting thing if it could hold you XBox Live account so you didn't have to recover your gamer tag when going to friend's house. I know they've made it easier but it's still far from being perfect. This could be the next step.
  • My controller doesn't recognize me. Maybe I should squeeze harder.
