Miyamoto Takes A Shot At Vita

Nintendo's creative visionary says that the powerful Sony handheld isn't "a very strong product."

While Miyamoto isn't known weighing in on his competitors, he definitely seems to have a low opinion of the Vita in a new interview with EDGE magazine.

When asked his opinion of the Vita, he commented, "It's obviously a very high-spec machine and you can do lots of things with it, but I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."

He added, "But I can't really say."

Mr. Miyamoto, I think you just did.

However, he also acknowledged Nintendo's own mistakes in the launch of its 3DS handheld. Miyamoto said, "When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising. We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time."

  • So he dissed the software-hardware combination of the Vita, and then he dissed the 3DS'S launch titles? Madness, just madness.
  • Mr. Miyamoto... Why do you bear such fangs? You used to be such a sweet bug collector.
  • Niether was the Wii mr. miyamoto...
  • Note to miyamoto San, nothing launches with good software these days
  • It isn't, he is 100% right. I played the Uncharted demo, and the graphics are VERY over rated. For example, this MK screen shot. I see no anti-aliasing what so ever. http://www.thegameraccess.com/images/mortal-kombat-vita-screenshot-4.jpg
  • IDK...

  • And the kettle calls the pot black...
  • Y'know, I have to agree with him all in all...all handheld systems at launch are complete crap. Heck, all console systems at launch are usually crap. The real test comes from what they do with the system once they're used to it, and whether they'll use their system to make good games that people want, or to have it be...well...crap.

  • Let em have it Miyamoto! I have to agree though, the software just isn't there. I would like to see the system pull it off like the 3DS did though, cause I need more reasons that Uncharted before I buy one.

  • All I got from this was: I'm not saying your product sucks....but it sucks.
  • Well he is right. Unless you want to play console ports the Vita doesn't have much on offer at this point. I see Sony making the same mistakes they made with the PSP. Nice high end hardware with a totally wrong vision on what games people want on their handhelds. Console ports are not it and "Lite" versions of console franchises are not it either. Beyond that though, the Vita is incomplete hardware. You have to buy an overpriced proprietary memory card to make the system 100% usable for all games. That is a my biggest problem with a handheld that is already expensive.
  • And we should listen to Miyamoto why? It's not like he'd EVER say "Buy a Vita, the 3DS sucks". I'm not saying the Vita is better(not many games yet), but he probably wants his games to sell, on the 3DS.
  • Hmm, he probably means it's just gimmicky, and not ambitious enough to really innovate. That's always been Nintendo's strong suit, is innovation. But even being a fan of Nintendo, I will concede the Vita does have way more horsepower behind it than the 3DS, and that can count for something among hardcore gamers.

  • Aaaauuuuooooo! Sooohhhhh!! No little plumber and elf. Aaaauuuoooo! Soooooohhhhhh!! No go-karts. Try Super Mario 586. It will fill your days with deja-vu!
  • Miayamoto I know you created a lot of legendary video games. But that was around 20 years ago. So until you create something new and awesome you dont get an opinion.
  • The Vita's problem is that its main feautre is cross platform play between the handheld and the ps3. This means that we will probably not see that many AAA quality Vita exclusives.

On a side note, I find it amusing how Sony fanboys always get riled up whenever someone doesn't like Sony's products. I seen both Xbox fans and Nintendo fans deal with stabs at their preferred consoles, but god forbid that someone makes a negative comment towards one of Sony's products. They quickly get their jimmies all rustled.
  • That's strange because I own both handhelds and I've spent more time using my Vita in the last couple of months since it was released than I have my 3DS which I've owned for over a year. There is only so much Mario I can take before it all starts to feel a little stale and repetitive. The Mario cow is running out of milk.
  • He was asked and he answered it with his honest opinion. Easy to critize when no one cares about your opinion.

  • Well, if we are giving pointless opinions, let me include mine. I haven't seen a strong combination of hardware and software from anything nintendo has made since the gamecube. At least sony got its console right.
