There is a place in the market for both single player experiences and massively multiplayer online titles. However, not every gamer wants to play both types of games.
This week we announced our June cover, which details ZeniMax’s new Elder Scrolls Online MMO. A lot of people are excited to see how the Elder Scrolls experience transfers to the MMO space. But many others would rather just see another single player experience in its place.
Where do you stand? Are you happy that Elder Scrolls Online is being made? A lot of people didn’t like the idea of turning Warcraft of Final Fantasy into MMOs, but once World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI were released they had an important impact on the MMO market. If you don’t like the idea of turning existing properties into MMOs, Why not? Developing MMOs is hard and takes a lot of work. If Elder Scrolls Online fails, it will cost ZeniMax a lot of money and tarnish the Elder Scrolls name. What should companies who want to break into the MMO market do instead?

I feel like I'm losing content because I don't have time to play MMOs.
I'm all for it, IF these things can come to consoles, but that rarely ever happens. Even though I've played every Elder Scrolls game since Morrow Wind I'm not going to be able to play the MMO because I don't have a computer that can run the game. While I love Skyrim and know that its a game I'll be able to play for years I do feel a little left out with the new MMO
Turning franchises into an MMO is always a risk. Just so happens that World of Warcraft actually worked and is still going strong. Everyone saw that it could be done, so everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Unfortunately, everyone feels that they need to copy WoW to succeed. The same is happening with Call of Duty and casual games. Everyone is seeing the success of those type of games and is jumping on the bandwagon. Eventually, something will have to give.
I'll keep my mind open about the Elder Scrolls Online, but the screenshot and some of the information I've read does not make me excited.
I really don't like playing with others at all. I like single player. I like it a lot. So, anytime a game I really like decides to MMO itself, I feel disappointed.
I'm alright with it actually, as long as its (hopefully) free-to-play
Though I'd seriously like just an additional Elder Scrolls thats just an RPG and not an MMO I usually do not actually have a very difficulty with it. But I will need to see much more prior to I choose to purchase it or not.
I'm more disappointed that many of these franchises are copying WoW than I am about them making MMO's. As someone said earlier, TES was succesful becuase of it's real time combat. With most MMO's, there are only hot keys and tab targeting. That, and some employ the whole point and click to attack, which is less than satisfactory for the TES franchise. I really feel like they're going backwards, but I haven't really heard anything about the game yet, so I'll keep my ears open and reserve judgement until then.
I'd say, go ahead with the whole MMO thing, maybe it will be really successful, and more importantly, fun for us. If it's a big flop then hey, at least they tried.
I've never really played an MMO, unless you count Runescape.(which was suffice it to say not a good introduction to the genre). I've also never had a sincere interest in playing an MMO,The transition WoW made from Pay to Play to Free to Play Online (Up to Level 20 at least) may have slightly raised my interest but what peaked it was last years release of Star Wars: The Old Republic Online. Though due to a shotty at best internet provider (HughesNet)any game that is Online only kind of puts a damper on any want I have of ever playing an MMO in the near future. I sincerely believe however that if there is to be a WoW killer Bethesda might be able to do it at least after a couple iterations of TES Online are released. And any worry one would have of Bethesda's single player products experiencing a reduction in quality with the addition of TES Online into the franchise should put those fears to rest, while Bethesda has been planning this game for awhile, and I'm sure there treating it as if it were a numbered title in the franchise in terms of a quality Development process, TES Online is still but a side project compared to The Main Series and there should be no fear of us not having Skyrim DLC this summer and Future TES singleplayer experiences should not take any damage from Bethesda's first MMO outing. I do not think Bethesda's transition from the series from a strict single player experience to a balanced coexistence with a(an) MMO(s)is a bad thing, and that it will only help Bethesda become a better Dev if it fails. This has got me excited and the interest in my playing an MMO is now through the roof. GO BETHESDA!!!
It never ends well for the lore of franchise in question. Sure WoW is a fantastic MMO, but it destroyed everything I love about Warcraft. Every single character that I felt something for as I followed their adventures and plights has been killed or brought down by a bunch of nameless dorks essentially. And that's how their stories end. What a let-down.
As far as TES goes, I love the franchise the way it is. However, I've always longed for a chance to play it with a friend or two on the same screen. Never been into MMOs for the simple fact that I can't devote that much time to them, and because I'm more into action play rather than point and click. I just hope there's more to this game that we don't know yet, particularly pertaining to next-gen consoles as I'm a console player myself. It hurts to think that TES will finally go multiplayer and I won't be able to enjoy it.
The screenshot was uninspiring, but overall I like the idea.I wonder what financial scheme they are going to use, subscription based,Free To Play w/micro transactions, or are they going to rely on expansion paks and DLC, or a combination of all of the above?
If it is another $15.00 a month deal as the base, I'll probably pass, there is only so much money I'll shell out on MMO's anyway.
With GW2 coming, it would have to be really good just to command the time.I have almost 400 hours into Skyrim and am not tired of it yet, you can only game so much...
If they do TES:O with no monthly subscription, and loading the worlds outside of towns as your own personal world, or with your group (similar to Guild Wars), then I might check it out. But since I'm already paying for plenty of stuff on top of bills and car payment s(Netflix, Xbox Live, WoW, Hulu Plus, etc.), I don't think I'd be willing to dish out another 15 bucks a month for a game I would prefer single player.
I think trying is better than not doing anything at all. I don't think that the makers of The Elder Scrolls would make a crappy MMO. If a game has a huge fan base why not try it out. It's a business and you have to take risks. If you have the right criteria for an MMO then they should do it.
To be honest, I didn't want a TES MMO. Not that the idea is bad or anything - the opposite really, it's a great idea. But I love the single player RPG.
Aside from the ME trilogy, it's currently the only RPG game out there that I love. Dragon Age was good, but the story felt really similar (in terms of structure) to KOTOR. And Dragon Age 2 was just...well I think the story felt too much like the backstory to an even bigger, better, more epic story.
However, I think TESO is being made by a separate Development studio than Todd Howard's. Also, since TESO is set 1000 years before Skyrim, it wouldn't make sense to just leave the Thalmor-Empire-Rebellion conflict up in the air. And just in case someone stupidly thinks "DLC" will tie it up....then I'll say, I highly doubt it.
I think, at the most, DLC/Expansion Packs will expand the story, but I doubt they will end it. To me, the Thalmor-Empire-Rebellion conflict sounds like an epic War that could span a hundred or more years. It would be brilliant.
So, yeah, I think the Single Player games are going to continue. But I want official confirmation on that though - just to be reassured that my favorite RPG franchise is set to continue.
It just seems like everybody is jumping on the 'ol MMO bandwagon. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was originally intended to be an MMO, but was then eventually published as the Action RPG it is today. I guess what I'm worried about, as a mostly console gamer, is will we be left with the scraps while the PCers get the focus. Obviously, there's games that wouldnt translate well into an MMO; but I'm talking RPGs especially. KOA: Reckoning is a prime example to me, because I level capped that game (Level 40?!?!) in about 72 hours, and still had a gazillion side quests to do in the game itself, not to mention the two DLCs. I love that game, but I'm done because, and I'm speculating here, there are rumors that they're working on an MMO for KOA, which is what they wanted it to be in the first place. With TESO, is Skyrim all but forgotten? Is it the last great RPG for consoles? I'm worried.

Conceptually taking the Elder Scrolls universe and translating the experience into an MMO sounds awesome. In my mind that would mean a world like Skyrim but I wasn't the only playable character. No hot tabs, quick bar, or any of that stuff. However I feel that is unrealistic. I don't want to bring WOW up but the screens I've seen immediately remind me of it with the color pallette and the characters. I hope that Zenimax, unlike Biowares' recent SWTOR, can actually inject a little vigor into a genre that is, to me personally, been done to death. The current MMO model is just boring as chicken nuggets and Vanilla Ice Cream. While delicious, there's nothing, new or exciting. Zenimax really needs to change it up because the people who play Elder Scrolls are only used to a single player experience, and speaking only for myself, don't want something too dramatically different.
