Miyamoto Takes A Shot At Vita

Nintendo's creative visionary says that the powerful Sony handheld isn't "a very strong product."

While Miyamoto isn't known weighing in on his competitors, he definitely seems to have a low opinion of the Vita in a new interview with EDGE magazine.

When asked his opinion of the Vita, he commented, "It's obviously a very high-spec machine and you can do lots of things with it, but I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."

He added, "But I can't really say."

Mr. Miyamoto, I think you just did.

However, he also acknowledged Nintendo's own mistakes in the launch of its 3DS handheld. Miyamoto said, "When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising. We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time."

  • Problem, Sony?

  • he' not really dissing. its a modest response to something. his objective want to tear down sony with cheap insults. All he said was that it wasnt very strong in his opinion. doesnt sound a dis to me. now what is a dis is Jack tretton calling nintendo a company that makes babysitting toys

  • That headline is really misleading.  He was acknowledging the similarities between the launch of the 3DS and the launch of the Vita.  Didn't really take a shot at the handheld.

  • Im sure the 3DS is much better... Not
  • good for him to talk crap on others? what has he done for the past 10 years except countless marios and zelda remakes??? this guys is overhyped, yu suzuki is by far better than him cus he gave us different games like shenmue, hang on, virtua on, scud racers, daytona usa, space harrier, and so many different games that miyamoto doesnt even compare. miyamoto is stuck on mario, zelda and pikmin. did the 3ds sell when it came ou? no! they had to cut prices and apologize to the world lol,..sony needs only to cut the price.
  • With all due respect, f*** you Mr. Miyamoto. I thoroughly enjoy my Vita, thank you very much.
  • He's not really taking a shot, he's just noting how the Vita needs more software.

  • This headline was really misleading. I thought Miyamoto was going on a rant or something but that's not it at all. He was asked about the Vita and he gave a modest response, he even felt bad about the statement by saying, "But I can't really say," and even goes on to acknowledge the 3DS's flaws. I am disappoint at this.

  • It's kind of ironic for him to badmouth the Vita at all, considering the farce that was the 3DS's launch. Between the bad launch titles, people being turned off by the 3D feature (you know, the whole selling point of the handheld), almost immediate price drop by $80 (and trying to justify it by giving free games to those who bought it before that which, while nice, didn't make the $80 reappear in my wallet), AND that horrid peripheral that attaches to your 3DS to give you a second analog stick, which should have been included to begin with. I'm not a fan of any one company. I own a 3DS, Vita, Wii, 360, PS3 etc. I've never had that sense of loyalty that some feel they must have when it comes to game companies, because I can accept that every system has great first party titles that really must be played. What kills me is that Miyamoto, or anyone else at Nintendo, has the balls to talk about Sony or even Microsoft when the fact is, they are incredibly behind the times, and the only reason they're still afloat is because of all the dedicated fans that will purchase anything with the brand name "Nintendo" on it.
  • Misleading title is misleading, look what you've done GI
  • He's right though. The PSP is a very unpopular system, and it's whole thing was "You can have console experiences on the go, people!". As the world marched on and the DS and smartphones have proven, we want games DESIGNED FOR MOBILE PLAY.

It's a cool, exclusive trick that the Vita can play Uncharted games and stuff, but Sony REALLY needed to show that it was going to have a much bigger variety of titles than that. Everything from the next Angry Birds to the aforementioned Uncharted and everything in between. But they didn't. Their whole thing, again, is "Look at all the console experiences you can have on the go people!". It's really sad that they didn't learn much from the PSP days. The drought in software since launch is also pretty lame; hurt the 3DS a ton as well.

At least they haven't done anything as stupid as use those stupid squirrels for an ad campaign*. So...that's progress!

  • Coming from someone who would describe the 3ds as a very good product, this means little.
  • oh please the 3DS is inferior to begin with.it might cater to kids but for a hardcore gamer,it cant hold a candle to the PSV.Miyamoto you sir are an idiot.
  • I wonder how many people actually read the damn article instead of posting right when they read the title
  • Aww, I was hoping for a flame war, but I all I got was a bunch of sensible people who actually read the article.
  • Cummon this is utter madness...

  • Ouch, but I like how he had a good reason and later mentioned his mistakes. I think competitors should play other company's merchandise to see what they can borrow from them and see how they can make something better, but yet original. I really hope what I said makes sense.
  • hes a HATER!!
  • Yeah, it's really strange he said that because the 3DS is definitely the inferior product.  I guess if you like 3D a lot, but I know that when I used it I had the 3D off most of the time.
