The lights are on
Update 2: The Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter raised a total of $1.8 million. Developer Harebrained Schemes posted a video thanking its backers for supporting the project.
Update: In less than a day, the project has already reached its goal of $400,000.
Following the trend of early 90s PC titles being reborn through crowd funding, several members of the original Shadowrun are looking to do a new game.
Shadowrun Returns is described as a "graphically rich, 2D turn-based, single-player game with deep story interaction." The team is focusing on "meaningful character development, and highly-contextual tactical combat," which will surely please fans of the original game.
Development is being handled by Harebrained Schemes, a Seattle-based studio comprised of Shadowrun’s original creator, Jordan Weisman, and many of the original Shadowrun authors and designers.
“Shadowrun is a world that is near and dear to the hearts of the Harebrained Schemes’ team, as well as to legions of fans worldwide,” said Weisman. “Kickstarter offers us an amazing opportunity to continue this classic’s legacy, all the while making its fans part of the development process.”
The team's goal is to raise $400,000. If funded, Shadowrun Returns will be released on PC, Mac, and Apple and Android tablets.
Head over to the team's Kickstarter page if you wish to donate.
It's great that these kickstarter projects are doing what the big developers refuse and releasing Mac ports day one. It really shows that there is huge demand for quality Mac titles and Mac gamers are more than willing to pony up the cash for the game before its even made.
Inafune was trying to create fan created game with Megaman Legends 3, but Capcom said Fan input is what killed Megaman Legends 3. However It appears fan input and desire is the wave of the future and helping to build amazing games that we wannna see. How is Inafune always can see the future in developing?
Someone please start a Kickstarter for Megaman Legends 3!
Oh man, I loved the SNES Shadowrun. I don't have the 15 bucks to drop now, but hopefully I'll be able to purchase it once it drops at the end of the year (and I get a job).
I'm really not surprised this was funded in a day. Looks like I might throw them a few of my well earned dollars :)
That was fast! Congratulations to Harebrained Schemes.
I thought you guys were talking about a new Shadowrun game, like a sequel to "Shadowrun" that came out on the Xbox 360 back in the day. Oh well.
Sweet, the sega version was the best.....
kickstarter is a great idea. Now there are three unique areas of development open to people, big budget studios with AAA titles, no money indie developments from people with fresh ideas and limited resources and kickstarter projects that allow companies absolute creative freedom when taking their dreams to our screens. Obviously there is a lot of middle ground for people to get great games out there, I'm super pumped to be a gamer in this day and age. exiting times.
That is crazy.
Awesome, gratz to Harebrained Schemes, hope this keep up and more devs keep getting chances like this.
We live in very interesting times.
Please o' Please let this redeem Shadowrun from that Multiplayer only debacle.
